    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: SallySmith836 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newjersey.counties.burlington/2990.1.1.1.1.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: You are correct in saying the state birth cert. is the best way to go. It usually gives the mother's maiden name and other information such as the birth place and dates for parents. If you need to hold up a DAR application because the state bc is hard to get I would send in the application with the baptismal cert. and state the state one will be send as soon as it arrives. As long as you can prove the generation connection the documents for the next generation may supply the info needed. I served 5 years as a National Vice Chairman Genealogy with Chapter Development Committee and have done over 100 applications in the last 10 years. You always use the best possible document but sometimes we have to get creative. Sally Smith Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have a certificate on order from the State of New Jersey, as well. I took your advise from your first post.(even though I hated to spend the money for another one!) I will just have to wait until it arrives. Thanks for helping to avoid a headache. I'm just saying that I didn't have mine when I joined in the early '90s and NSDAR accepted the baptismal cert. I used the short form, as my mother was already a member. They may have tightened up on the rules since then, as they do periodically. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I'm Registrar for my DAR chapter and reading directly from the DAR instructions: "For proof send the best source available, such as birth, death, or marriage certificates..." If a birth certificate is available for a state (such as NJ beginning with 1848) then that would be the best source available. If someone submitted a baptismal certificate as proof when I know NJ has birth certificates for the year in which the person was born--I'd ask for the birth certificate. Suppose I were to accept the baptismal record and a birth certificate later surfaced showing contradictory information--maybe even a different father's name? That is why the birth certificate would be required as being best evidence available. Joan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. They WILL accept that (provided the baptismal certificate was recorded at or near birth) if you can supply proof that a birth certificate isn't available--but in this case it SHOULD be. I grew up in Burlington and was born in Mt. Holly. The state certificate will have more info on it. Also, if you have a baptismal certificate, the DAR should accept that if it has your parents names on it. I used it when I joined the DAR since I didn't have a state certificate either. I have my original birth certificate with the raised seal. Does anyone else have a certificate without their parents listed? I am trying to prove parent/child relationship for application to the DAR and never noticed until today, that my mother and father are not listed on my birth certificate! Is this common for the state of NJ?? I have acquired many birth certificates (for genealogy research) from around the country and have never seen one without parents listed.
