    1. [NJBurlin] British Genealogy
    2. Good morning. I have the opportunity to go to London in April. Does anyone know of a British genealogy group or center where I might visit and inquire after some ancestors who might have been English? Thank you Suzanne

    2. There was the restoration of a monumental document that had been lost earlier. It was a Ledger, and is a provision for black citizens and white alike to benefit, genealogically. I suggested that the real value of the document was not in a dust-collecting publication, but in the material contained therein. Here was, what I think is an intelligent suggestion, from Paula Manzella: Hi Vince! Thanks for your comments regarding the Ledger. Unfortunately, at this time the Burlington County Library does not have the appropriate resources to undertake such a project. You may wish to voice your concerns to the NJBURLIN list. Maybe there is a kind soul who is willing to organize a transcription. Sorry the Library can't do more. Isn't there one brave soul who would be willing to tackle such a project? Vince Summers Nelson County Virginia

    2. Donna E. Ristenbatt
    3. I have been looking over some 1840 US Fed Pop Censuses, specifically for WORTH and ROSSELL. I am eyeing a particular family - Henry WORTH in New Hanover Twp. - page 49A for several reasons that would fit my particular family. I noted that 4 names away there is a Daniel WILLS family. When Peter WORTH, son of ?(possibly Henry) died at a young age, 3 of his daughters went to live with a WILLS family. Is anyone researching this family and would know if there is a WORTH/ROSSELL or ARCHER connection? (The daughters went to live with an Amos WILLS.) Thanks. 1. [NJBurlin] Militia List Response
    2. Dear Donna, The 1793 census for the military list was in response to the law of 1792. The count previous to that was the 1790 census. The preface to the book you mentioned (page ii) has a very good introduction as to what the list was, why it was taken and how it has come to replace the lost 1790 census. It is not complete as a census because it only lists men of military age. It is, however, the closest thing to the 1790 census available for NJ. I hope this is of somel help. Georgia Whitson

    3. I had asked a question pertaining to the 1793 Militia List, as found in the book _New Jersey in 1793_ by James S. Norton. I have been looking at the one for Chesterfield Twp. and noted an interesting entry. It says: (under the first column of those part of the Militia of New Jersey, as opposed to the second column of those "who desire to be exempted from Military Duty agreeable to Law,") "Richard DURDING Deceased since last ct." Now if there were a "last ct." does anyone know where it would be recorded, what year it was recorded and if that record survived? Thank you.

    1. [NJBurlin] 1793 Militia Census of New Jersey
    2. Donna, If your ancestor was on the New Jersey Militia List for 1793 it means that in 1793 he was between the ages of 18 and 45. The census was taken in order to meet the requirements of the law pased on November 30, 1792 which aimed at the reorganization of the New Jersey State Militia. I hope this helps. Georgia Whitson

    3. I would like clarification on the above. If someone is listed on the 1793 Militia Census for the State of New Jersey (this being in Burlington County, under Chesterfield Twp.), does this mean that the person served during the Rev. War, or that he was simply a part of a 1793 Militia for NJ. Thank you for clarification. 3. I was remiss in not mentioning to the list that most all of my data is pre-1750, because my lines had moved on or married into others by then. Those names once again... ALBERTSON, ANTRAM, AUSTIN, BORTON, BUTCHER, HAINES, HOLLOWAY, PHARO, STRATTON Collateral lines include: ATKINSON, EMLEY, LIPINCOTT, OWENS, SHINN Cordially, Tom Townsend BTW, my Townsends are from the other end of NJ - Cape May Co. Is there a list for that county?
