I've returned the copy of _New Jersey in 1793_ by James S. Norton [An abstract and index to the 1793 Militia Census of the State of New Jersey], which I borrowed on interlibrary loan [from the Smithsonian library!]. before I sent it back, I copied the index and the 'Abstracts of the Militia Census of 1793' of Burlington and Middlesex counties and the 'Abstract of 1793 Militia' of Monmouth county, so I can perform lookups for others who don't have immediate access to this resource. keeping in mind this is a military census-- meanining men under age 18 or over age 45 [or non-white] are likely to NOT appear in this listing --I'm happy and willing to do lookups. I can provide citings from the names in the index, and if they are on the pages [in the counties] I copied, I'll provide that info as well. the lists include those who paid an annual fee of $3 to be exempted from Military Duty, artillery, Troop of Horse, and are listed by township in each county. please send your ancestor's name, and if known, county [esp in cases of common name], and in the subject line, please put > NJ lookup < so my sort filter will help you find me faster. also, please be patient; my work picks up every now & then and delays my genealogy time somewhat. thanks, and good luck to us all! kirby in NC kirbz@northstate.net researching KIRBY, BRITTON, CLAYTON, GASTON and others in NJ

Hi list I am trying to trace the family of Prettyman's that attended the church in the early 1800's forward. So far I know of a Samuel Hendry who married Mary Llewellyn Hughes on 3/13/1806. Their daughter Mary married Rev. Levin M. Prettyman of Georgetown, Delaware. Anybody out there recognize these 2 families? Thanks for all your time Sue Prettyman
The Burlington County Genealogy Club meets the first friday of every month at the Corson Poley Center on Lawrence Street in Burlington. The library will be open from 6pm to 9pm. The meeting will begin at 7pm. There is usually time after the meeting to do additional research in the library, and plenty of helpful experts on-hand. The June meeting will be this Friday, June 1st. The speaker will be Mr Haines, who will speak about Burlington County Probate Records. If you need more details or directions, please contact Ricki Lucas at <RLucas916@aol.com>. Sorry for the late notice! I am not always as organized as I would like to be. Michael Gilbert <NJBURLIN-ADMIN@RootsWeb.com>

Just finished entering 138 people at www.findagrave.com who are buried at Mt. Holly Cemetery. Most of the information is from the Cemetery Records and does not include a birth date. Most of the records list the age at death and where they resided. Some information is from tombstones. Will add more later. -- Doris
My father was in the sixth Marine Division during WWII. He was in Okinawa as well as China after the war. I have his discharge papers, but all they tell me is dates of service, and where he enlisted and got discharged. Is there still a way to get a hold of his records? Someone told me that they may have parished. Any help would be appreciated. I found a great web site on the Sixth Marine division. They have a picture on there that I was happy that included my Dad. It also has on there newsletters that have an account of what it was like to be there. Jerry Varner http://www.sixthmarinedivision.com/
Jerry The National Personnel Records Center is at: http://www.nara.gov/regional/mpr.html This tells you how to get military records. As far as your Dad's records having perished, only Army and Air Force records were destroyed by the 1973 fire. Many thanks for everyone who answered me about the NJ Vital Statistics. I went there today. The people are very nice. Some people waited almost 2 hours. I happened to hit it just right and waited only 1 1/2 hours. I got everything I needed except 1 and they said they would send it to me as it was getting towards closing. It was well worth the 2 1/2 hour trip. Again Many thanks Jane Schumar@ptd.net --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). The New Jersey Churchscape http://www.njchurchscape.com/ Spotted by ResearchBuzz, this site should appeal to both Garden State natives (such as myself) and those interested in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American churches. Upon first inspection, the site appears to be an online magazine, with monthly features and book reviews. It is quite a bit more than this, however, as the site hosts a "database and photographic inventory on more than half the 18th & 19th century churches in the state." This database is accessed via the "List of churches, by county" link on the lower-left-hand side of the page. The photos are browsed by county and church name, with municipality, sect, founding and building dates, and building style listed on the initial results page. This page links to a photo and very brief description. The site is an ongoing project and has potential for both scholars and interested general users. source: The Scout Report Volume 7, Number 18 May 25, 2001 A Publication of the Internet Scout Project Computer Science Department, University of Wisconsin -- Malcolm Schalick Sharp http://sharp.rootsweb.com/ --
