I was going (page by page) through the 1920 census last night. In Centre Twp, Camden County, I found the Eureka Sanitorium. This place lists about 30 children ranging in age from 17 down to 2 months and all are listed as illigitimate. Most of the names are hard to read, but, if anyone has an interest in my checking for a name, let me know. Diane Diane DeMore Burlington County Website Co-ordinator -------------------

To Jack, Kathy & Joy and all the list - The Poorhouse Book is in the manuscript collection (#140) of the Burlington County Historical Society. Joan Lanphear, the librarian, will be glad to help you. The Library is open Monday thru Thursday 1-4; Sundays 2-4; Wednesdays 10-12 and 1-4. It is located in the Society's Corson Poley Center, 454 Lawrence St., Burlington, NJ. Telephone 609-386-4773 The indenture states the name and age of the child, and occasionally an adult, to whom he/she is indentured, for how long, what the master or mistress will provide for them and what they will be expected to do. It is signed by the President of the Poorhouse , the persons claiming the person indentured and witnesses. I plan to provide those names to the list too. Eventually I will post all of them on the Poorhouse Lady's site. http://www.poorhousestory.com/ Erika
Hi Donna, The indenture states the name and age of the child, and occasionally an adult, to whom he/she is indentured, for how long, what the master or mistress will provide for them and what they will be expected to do. It is signed by the President of the Poorhouse , the persons claiming the person indentured and witnesses. I plan to provide those names to the list too. What letters of the alphabet do you have?. I'll send you a copy of the others. Eventually I will post all of them on the Poorhouse Lady's site. http://www.poorhousestory.com/ "Donna E. Marie, Thanks for the kind words. I scoured libraries and court houses for about 20 years looking for my husband's gggrandfather only to find out recently that a distant relative had his certificate of indenture and family Bible in her possession. Reading the indentures in The Poorhouse Book was really sad. You wonder what happened to the parents that their children, some no more than toddlers, were put in the Poorhouse. What happened to them there and then with the people who took them out? How they must have suffered physically and emotionally - with no psychological counseling, just toughing it out. Our ancestors were made of strong stuff! I hope that a name on these lists opens a gate for someone. Erika Marie Wright wrote: > thank you so much.
