    1. [NJBurlin] Virus Warnings (from listowner)
    2. Michael Gilbert
    3. I am sending this email to both of me mailing lists at RootsWeb, so I apologize if you see it twice. As a reminder to all, virus warnings should be sent to the listowner (that's me), rather than the entire list. With the current virus making the rounds, if a person is infected and is using Micrsoft Outlook, the virus will try to send itself to email addresses found in unread messages in the person's inbox. So, if you have ever sent an email to a mailing list or to a person who has become infected with this virus, that person may still have your email saved in his box and marked as unread, although usually it only affects people who have recently sent email. In the future, if you receive a message with a virus that you think comes from someone subscribed to this mailing list, email me immediately at the address below and let me know the person's email address. I can check if that person is subscribed and take action to contact him and temporarily remove him from the list until he corrects the problem. This also points out something that cannot be stressed enough - *everyone* who uses email regularly, especially people who use a Microsoft operating system, should have anti-virus software installed and updated regularly. If you do not do this, you not only risk everything on your own computer, but the computers of everyone else with whom you communicate. It also seems that using Microsoft Outlook for email leaves one open to many more virus attacks, because its known security flaws and large user base make life easy for virus authors. If you have any questions about this, or anything else related to this mailing list, please feel free to contact me. Mike Gilbert <NJBURLIN-ADMIN@RootsWeb.com>

    1. [NJBurlin] CARLL LINEAGE
    2. Deborah Johnson
    3. Good Morning Everyone - Let me start by saying that this is quite lengthy, if it concerns anything in your line, I highly recommend printing before reading it. It also, in my opinion raises more questions than answers, perhaps between us all we can figure it out, along with the articles that were written which preceded this. When you see (*my note...) that is things I have put in, as I'm sure you've figured out, I usually save those for the end, but this time it helped to incorporate them. Also, I'm actually almost out of CARLL pages, what I do have, which I thought was all CARLL at first, is a bit of MASKELL information. Please be informed, I'm not really reading all of this before I type it up, thus the reason for the (*my note's in the e mails). Please respond via the list to any thoughts you have on this line, this way no one misses anything and we can all help each other to sort it all out. :-) I have been in touch recently with the compiler of this information and she is sending me anything else she has uncovered since 1991 when she sent this information to my step father shortly before his passing. 1. [NJBurlin] Email warning
    2. Just wanted to alert folks on mailing lists I belong to. For the past week I have been receiving emails at this address with the subject line as RE: nothing else. This email does contain a virus. I had forwarded several of these to my yahoo account because they had attachments and got emails back from Yahoo that they contained one. I haven't opened any of them, thank goodness. And Yahoo does not let that mail go through to the recipient(s) on the forward. Now, most of them have been from unknown persons, but, some have been from people that I know are on the lists. I know none of those folks are doing this, so someone is picking up names/email addresses from these lists and using them. Please be careful out there. Yours, Diane DeMore Burlington County Website Co-ordinator http://www.shovergen.com/njburlin/index.html -------------------

    1. [NJBurlin] Ayres in old high school yearbook
    2. Today at the Burlington Historical Society I was perusing old high school yearbooks from Burlington City High, looking for my grandmother and her siblings. I only got lucky finding one with her in it - guess the rest didn't go to high school, or didn't finish. But an Ayres jumped out at me ... She was a teacher, listed in the 1918 Burlington City High School yearbook - Florence N. Ayres. She wore glasses and appeared to be about 40, but it was hard to tell as it was a sort of 3/4 profile view of her face. If this is a relation to you, hope it helps, as I know some folks on this are searching for that name! If I had had more time, I would have jotted down surnames to post to the list. It seems that in the 1900s (before 1915 or so), the graduating class was TINY, maybe made up of 25 students. Between 1915 and 1930, it progressed to about 50 at the most. I guess most people then didn't graduate as they had to work to help support their families. The yearbooks were great though, listing anecdotes about each graduating student. If it's any help at all, here are a few names that are on the 1918 page that I photographed of my grandmother: Herman Fox Virginia Gravener Martha Bentley Haines Holly Knott in Bucks County, PA HollyKnott@aol.com

    2. Deborah Johnson
    3. Good Morning Everyone - As always, feel free to pass this along. :-) The following was copied at the Gloucester County Historical Society on 1/26/1989. CARLL FAMILY NOTES (The following record is copied form the Year Book of the Church of the Advent, Cape May, N.J., issue of Summer 1931. This small booklet is now hard to find. Copied March 1959 by Edward J. Raser, exactly as printed in the Year Book. Some data appears to have come from a bible.) John Carll settled in East Hampton, L.I., and died intestate, October 1, 1691. His second wife was Remember, married after June 1683. Children: John, Abial born about 1672, died 1739, Salem County, N.J.; Recompense; Rachel, born after March 1719, married Edward SHAW; Mercy, born 1721, September 21st. Abial Carll, born about 1672, died 1739 at Greenwich Township, Salem Co., N.J., names of his two wives not known. Children: Abial, Jr., born about 1696, died after 1755, married about 1726 Mercy, daughter of Thomas and Mercy (STRATHAM) MASKELL; Eliakim, born about 1698, died before March 12th, 1759, married Elizabeth. Abial Carll, Jr., settled with his father in Salem County, N.J. Children of Abial Carll Jr., and Mercy: Mercy, born 19 April, 1728, died 2 December, 1787, married November 21, 1749, Salthiel FOSTER, born January 10, 1725, died May 22, 1792; Constantine Carll. Constantine Carll married first (name of wife not known), married second by license of December 15th, 1762, widow Sarah WHITE, daughter of William PEPPER. Children: Mehitable, married December 5, 1776, Barlow WILLIAMS; Sarah, born April 25th, 1755, died March 28th, 1781, married Noah HARRIS; Gilbert Tenant, born April 21st, 1764; Mary, born December 11th, 1770, died March 18th, 1843, married Aaron KENT, som of James and Susannah KENT; Constant, born January 16, 1777; Thomas Maskell, born June 15, 1780. Note: An abstract of the will of Constantine Carll, dated August 9, 1794, proved April 22, 1795, appears in NJA 37:67. My notes: GARLICK (widow of Richard SHAW Sr.) Remembers maiden name and her former spouse is handwritten by the lady who copied it, I included this because she sent my step father the documentation to prove it. It would appear that contrary to what most of us thought, Abial was born in the US, not Germany. Also, which is the correct spelling of his name? Abial? or Abiel? That's all for now, I may do another one later in the day since this one was so short. :-) Take care - Deb

    1. [NJBurlin] Pt. 2 - CARLL Family + Other Surnames
    2. Deborah Johnson
    3. Good Morning Everyone - As always, feel free to pass this along. :-) Also, there are many pages I brought back concerning this family and other connected families, so please, read carefully so as to not miss anything! :-) As with yesterday, Carll will be in regular type, all other surnames in caps. This is part of the same pages I sent yesterday, author and year unknown. Enjoy! :-) Jeremiah Carll, of this Militia Roll, a son of John and Phebe (LOPER) Carll, was born in 1767; died June 13, 1811. He married Ruth, daughter of John and Susannah (JOSLIN) WOODFRUFF. They had ten children, viz., Ephraim Carll, of Carll's Corner (*my note, Carll's Corner is located in Bridgeton, NJ and is still called this to this day), born 1790, died 1840, married Damaris NICHOLS, widow of Thomas GARRISON, and 2nd, Esther P. DAVIS; David Carll born 1792, died 1833, married Catherine SOUDER, daughter of George SOUDER, Esq.; William Carll, born 1794, died from being hit on the head by a bucket while digging a well in 1853, married Lydia NICHOLS, sister of the wife of his brother, Ephraim; Eli Carll, born 1795, died 1845; married Margaret OTT; Jeremiah Carll, Jr., born 1798, died 1841 in Cincinnati, Ohio, married Louvisa BURT, daughter of Moses BURT, of Fairfield Township; Lot Carll, born 1800, died 1872, married three times, Miriam DOUGHTY, Henrietta KNAPPEY, Sarah RUSSELL, widow of Jeremiah RUSSELL; Ruth Carll, born 1802, died 1872, married Alpheus LOPER; Phebe Carll, born 1805, died 1881, married David BROOKS; John Carll, born 1807, died in Huntington County, Indiana 1869, married Martha HARRIS, Theny Carll, died in infancy. Jeremiah Carll (continued). Ephraim, son of Jeremiah and Ruth (WOODRUFF) Carll, was born December 11, 1790 and died at Carll's Corner, Deerfield Township on June 17, 1840. He married 1st, September 21, 1811, Damaris (NICHOLS) GARRISON, widow of Thomas GARRISON, and daughter of Isaac NICHOLS who died in 1817. He married 2nd, May 5, 1820, Esther Preston DAVIS, daughter of Benjamin and Thomasin (LUMMIS) DAVIS. During the War of 1812, Ephraim Carll bought a farm about two and a half miles North of Bridgeton. From this event, the neighborhood became known as Carllsburg and later as Carll's Corner. It had been long known as Facemires Corner. He built a substantial frame house and shops for his wheelwright and blacksmith trades. (This property in recent years was owned by the late Howard BROOKS who carried on the blacksmith business.) For several years Ephraim Carll ran a tavern known as the Carllsburg Hotel. He was a respectable and temperate man and conducted his establishment accordingly. By his first wife, Damaris (NICHOLS) Garrison, Ephraim Carll had two sons, viz., Jeremiah, born August 18, 1812, married Susan, daughter of Noah and Phebe (FITHIAN) HARRIS. They had no children. The second son, Ephraim Carll, Jr., born February 18, 1815, died in Cincinnati, Ohio, March (or February) 2, 1853. He moved to Cincinnati in 1837 and married Jane CAMPBELL of Covington, Kentucky. Ephraim, Jr. was like his father, Ephraim Carll, of Carll's Corner, Deerfield Township, a respectable and temperate man. He bought property in Cincinnati at the corner of 7th and Martin Row, where for fourteen years he ran a hotel called the Temperance House. He also bought other real estate in Cincinatti and at his death was a fairly ealthy man. He and his wife, Jane CAMPBELL, had two sons, Ephraim and Thomas Carll. After his death of consumption in 1853, aged 38 years, Jane (CAMPBELL) Carll, widow of Ephraim, married Dr. James B. CAMBELL, of Cincinnati. By his second wife, Esther Preston DAVIS, Ephraim Carll had three sons, viz, Hiram Davis, born October 23, 1821; Richard Davis, born September 2, 1824; Robert Bruce Carll, born June 6, 1829. They lived in and around Bridgeton. That's all for today! Take care - Deb

    1. [NJBurlin] CARLL Family + Other Surnames
    2. Deborah Johnson
    3. Good Morning Everyone - Here's another page I brought back, again, feel free to pass it along. Since this is primarily about the Carll family, I shall put that surname in regular type and other surnames in all caps. Taken from the Gloucester County Historical Society - From N.J. Genesis? - hand written, hard to read Vol. 16 No. 2 - that is all it says on the page. I have no idea what year this article was written or by whom. Jeremiah CARLL - Was born in 1767, a son of John and Phebe (LOPER) Carll. The first of this family name noticed in Cumberland and Salem Counties were John and Abiel Carll, brothers and Eliakim Carll. The relationship, if any, of the latter to the brothers is unknown to the editor. John Carll was in East Hampton, Long Island, New York as early as January 21, 1668 when he purchased various parcels of land. He died at East Hampton on October 1, 1691 and his widow, Remember Carll, was appointed admr'x. (*my note, this must mean administrator) of his estate on October 21, 1691. They had sons, John and Abiel Carll. (Riverhead Parchment Book, page 14, and Riverhead Records, Liber A, page 144) (*my note, these must be in East Hampton) John and Abiel Carll, described as brothers in deeds for land at East Hampton, appear frequently in local records until 1714 when they apparently sold all of their lands at East Hampton. Between 1715 and 1723 they had moved to Salem County, New Jersey and registered their earmarks for cattle, etc. On the same page and written by the same hand in the Salem County Earmark Book with the marks of "John Carll Snr." and "Abiel Carll" is the mark of "Elicum Carrole". After he registered his earmark, nothing further is found in Salem County public records concerning "John Carll Snr.". Directly beneath the earmark of the latter is recorded one for "John Carll Junr". It is believed that he was the same as John Carll who settled in the Cohansey Precinct of Salem County (Cumberland County since 1747/8) early in the 18th century along with Eliakim Carll. More about these men will appear later in this article. Abiel Carll settled in Greenwich, Salem County (Cumberland) as early as 1719. He bought a town lot on the east side of the main street in Greenwich at the upper corner of the intersection of the road leading through Bowentown from Bridgeton. For many years a one story stone building long used as a blacksmith shop stood on part of this lot. It is opposite the brick house long occupied by the late Charles EWING. Abiel Carll and his wife, Sarah, died in 1739. Their son, Abiel Carll, Jr., by deed dated May 6, 1740 sold the town lot of his father to Samuel CLARK. Abiel Carll and Sarah Carll had several children; Abiel Carll, Jr. married Sarah TURNER, widow of John TURNER of the Town of Salem. Hannah, daughter of Abiel Carll was baptized at East Hampton on June 15, 1701. Martha, daughter of Abiel Carll, was baptized at East Hampton on January 10, 1714. She married Jeremiah FITHIAN, son of Joshua and Sarah (DENNIS) FITHIAN of Greenwich. Jeremiah FITHIAN was born April 5, 1713. His wife, Martha Carll, survived him and died in 1779. They had three children. Their son, Sylvester FITHIAN, was an idiot from birth and lived until about 1787. Hannah FITHIAN married 1st, April 10, 1799, William BARKER. She married 2nd, December 19, 1771, David MULFORD. He was killed in a skirmish with the Hessians near Haddonfield in 1777. His body was brought home and buried in the ancient graveyard of the Cohansey Baptist Church near the former Sheppard's Mill. Esther, daughter of Jeremiah and Martha (Carll) FITHIAN, married, as his 2nd wife, Thomas MASKELL, Esq. of Greenwich. On the road from Shiloh to Friesburg in Cumberland County was a settlement anciently called Carll Town. The precise time that John and Eliakim Carll came there has not been learned, but it was between 1735 and 1741. The road there is a boundary between the Townships of Hopewell and Stow Creek. On the west, or Stow Creek side, March 4, 1741, Eliakim Carll purchased a farm of 100 acres Zachariah DUNN. It is interesting to note that the records of the Shiloh Seventh Day Baptist Church show the marriage of Zachariah DUNN and Rachel Carll on January 28, 1739/40. Her identity has not been learned, but she was possibly a sister of either Eliakim or John Carll. Early settlers at Carll Town were Hugh, Zachariah and Benjamin DUNN, sons of Hugh DUNN of Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey. They were Seventh Day Baptists. Zachariah DUNN returned to Piscataway and he and his wife, Rachel Carll, died there. A little north of the farm bought by Eliakim Carll, on the Hopewell Township side of the road, John Carll bought a plantation of 155 1/2 acres. It was made up of lands of the West New Jersey Society and Cornelius MASON's "Winchcomb Manor". The Harmony M.E. Church was later built on this farm and in the last quarter of the 19th century it was owned by Reece HURFF. Joh Carll is said to have married Catherine DUNN. He died at Carll Town in 1768 and his son, Samuel Carll, succeeded him on the farm there. John and Catherine Carll had five children. Their son, John Carll, was baptized by Rev. David EVANS at the Pittsgrove Presbyterian Chruch on Mya 6, 1744. He settled in Deerfield Township and bought a farm near the present Woodruff M.E. Church. It is on the west side of the old Parvin's Mill Road. John Carll married Phebe, daughter of James LOPER, Sr. That's all for today, hope someone finds it of use :-) Take care - Deb

    3. Is there anyone on the list researching Palmers from the Salem County, New Jersey area? I'm at one of those brick walls and if anyone could help me, I would gratefully appreciate it. Below is what I have put together from hunches, some census information and some marriages. I descend from William Franklin Palmer who I is listed below as a son of John C. Palmer. I have no proof that John C. is my William's father. Are there any connections to the Palmers found in the surrounding New Jersey counties? Mary Madeline Wheaton who married Wm. F. Palmer and William HH Wheaton who married Mary E. Palmer are more than likely brother and sister. Thanks in advance for any information or leads.
