    1. Re: [NJBurlin] Prager Family
    2. Hi Mike, I have a small amount of information on the PRAGER family: Christine PRAGER daughter of George PRAGER and Margaret EINOLF was married to Harry L. VANDEGRIFT son of Daniel Middleton VANDEGRIFT and Mary Nutt JOHNSON on November 24, 1915 at the Broad St Methodist Church in Burlington . Christine was listed as being 19 years old and was born in Imlaystown. Witnesses were Elizabeth and Joseph SHEPPERD. I also have this from the 1915 state census: 117 East Union Street Burlington NJ George A. PRAGER born August 1866 in NJ father born Germany mother born Ireland Machinist Margaret PRAGER born 1875 (can't read month) born Germany parents born Germany Christine PRAGER born Nov. 1896 in NJ Clerk There may have been other family members, I had copied this page for another family and did not notice the Prager family till later--Christine was the last entry on this page. Hope this helps. I have met some descendents of this VANDEGRIFT/PRAGER line if you are interested in contacting them, please let me know. Kathy Karn

    3. At the risk of getting a caution from the listowner for a non-genealogy discussion, let me throw in both a little history and a warning not to judge the actions of our forebears through the prism of today's lights. Up until the Progressive movement of the early 20th century, most "developmentally disabled" (as the PC term is today) were cared for by their families. With that movement came "Social Darwinism", also called the "science" - and I use the term loosely - of eugenics. (The whole idea came from E.R. Johnstone's "The Jukes and the Kallikaks", which purported to trace two families infamous for their defective children - a study later proved to be 95% fiction.) By the way, Hitler borrowed Johnstone's idea and simply took it one step further. Johnstone got a State School named after him. The idea was that mental retardation came from defective genes, and the only way to weed out that population humanely was to prevent them from reproducing. Thus what is now the Vineland Developmental Center was split into two separate institutions, the females continuing at Vineland and the males going off to colonize a place in the Burlington County pines, originally (and sometimes even today) referred to as "The Colony". Anyone with a great interest can read "The Story of Four Mile Colony" written, I believe, in the 40s - it is horrifying in its overt discrimination against those (read Pineys) whose lives and aspirations did not conform to middle class notions of propriety. Please remember that in those dark ages a mentally retarded child became to be regarded as a shame on the family, and physicians would advise the parents to institutionalize the child and to forget he ever existed. Today we see institutionalization as a last resort, but in those days there were no other choices - no school, no day training, no Occupational Training, no caseworkers, nothing. OK, off my soapbox.

    3. Gail - Wow, I grew up in Vineland and never heard the "other side of the story". How awful. I know that at both schools, parents seldom visited in the 1980's also. I remember when I was working at the school across the road, name is still escaping me, how sad it was that I probably spent more time with some of the people living there than their own parents did. This was in about 1985/6. My mom also worked as a case worker at the same one I didfor awhile, she would always come home so upset at the lack of "family involvement". At that time her death cert. in 1914 stated her death occurred at the Asylum for Feeble Minded Women which I understand at the time it did take senile patients. It has apparently changed uses many times over the years. Hope this helps to clarify the discussion. Best Regards, Joan

    3. Dear List, It is the Vineland State School. It housed many different types of individuals. A lot of the (clients) were mentally challenged but several were runaways that were placed there by the courts. The different building were called cottages. These women were not feeble-minded. Several of the clients would runaway from the school and come back pregnant. Many of the girls took care of these little ones until they could be placed, if they ever were. Most of these girls had family just many did not visit. This is not heresy this is from knowledge of the school. In the late 70's I did a college report (Psychology) for Burlington County Community College and had an interview with doctors' , i.e..e, surgeons as well as psychologists. On some of these stones will be doubled, New ones were placed, and the older ones still left. I thought I would put both, some include month & day, Lori Anna DIXON July 10, 1963 Dec. 27, 1996 Mary E.
