He died 5 Sep 1901 according to my mother's information and was followed by his wife Catharine Ann (POTTER) CROSS in 1907. Thank You Bobbie Smith, and Sally Smith, and Mel Hilliard, and djweber, and Dick (RichaSl1). I will try again with the Burlington Historical Society. Maybe a letter with a donation and/or membership dues enclosed will prompt a reply this time. I will also check again with Swarthmore College. Maybe this time a more knowledgeable person will answer my query. And I will look at the microfilms available through FamilySearch. Perhaps they have added something new, or I have overlooked something that's been there all along. Admittedly, it's been almost two years since I last tackled this "brick wall", and I appreciate all the reminders of where I might look. Happy researching to all, Carol Payne [email protected]
Hello Listmembers, Does anyone know where I might find the Marriage and Birth records for the Burlington MM (possibly the Philadelphia MM), for the early 1700s (possibly late 1600s)? I have inquired of the NJ State Archives and I have looked at all listings and abstracts that I can find, and I am now convinced the only place left is in the actual Quaker meeting records. Henry Thompson/Thomson's arrival via Philadelphia, was recorded in the NJ Sec of State books on 1 December 1684. He was indentured on the accounts of Wm Dockwra for 7 years. He was given/obtained land in Mansfield Twp, Burlington Co., and there are indentures for additional, adjoining land in 1710 and 1724. He wrote his Will in 1732, and died in 1735. His Will mentions his wife "Elizabeth Thomson" and his four children - John, Thomas, Dinah Hobson, and Rebecca Quest. Earlier researchers say his wife was Elizabeth HAMMEL, but I have yet to find any "proof". And, I can find no birth records for any of the children, although I have found marriage records for 3 of them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Carol Payne in Oklahoma [email protected]
I apologize for cross-posting. Forwarded with permission and by request... -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [GSNJ] Images of Civil War Service Files for U.S. Colored Troops Posted to State Archives Website Date: Fri, 03 Mar 2006 15:11:32 -0500 From: Joseph R Klett <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Dear List Members: New Jersey State Archives is proud to announce the addition of the first imaged manuscript collection to our website at the following URL: http://www.njarchives.org/links/guides/sdea4015.html The online presentation contains nearly 300 images selected from the Archives' service files of New Jersey's black soldiers enlisted in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War. Included are muster and service certificates, letters from family members, and other records relating to the soldier's service. Not all documents have been scanned, as many are brief notations, etc., by the Adjutant General's Office. However, the image collection is rich, and we believe it will be an important genealogical resource as well as a celebration of an important aspect of Black History in our state. Special acknowledgement and thanks go to the Archives' Publications Unit, namely Joanne Nestor for her extensive scanning work, and Lois Bredlow and Veronica Calder for their work creating the webpages. We hope you enjoy the new material! We have much more in store for the website (we hope) in the months ahead... With best wishes, Joseph R. I am searching for a Samuel Budd that lived in New Mills, Burlington Co., N. J. in 1820....He is listed one of our grandfather's wills, James Ross, as the executor. He was appointed in December of 1820. Our James and Samuel must have been close to each other as James' son, James Jr. named second son, Samuel Budd Ross. Does anyone have info on this gentleman. If so I would appreciate knowing it. Thanks Marilyn Ross
Dear List, I stand corrected. I am glad to see that so many are taking an interest in this important issue. Let us hope our efforts knock some sense into our elected officials. Ralph Allen Cooper City Fl.

Dear List, I googled bill A1390 and only found a reference to the following Bill: A1390 Sponsors: Doria (D31) +3 Summary: Provides additional funds for local units awarded federal grants for firefighting personnel, equipment, and fire safety education and enforcement. Cospons: Pou (D35); Steele (D35); Sires (D33) Related: 2000:A1546; 1998:A3083 Status: 01/08/2002 – Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee History: 01/08/2002 – Introduced and referred to Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee. I do not see relevance to any Homeland security issues. Has anyone verified all the details to this issue? I hope its not a hoax. Ralph Allen Cooper City Fl. Allen, Webb, Nixon, Smith, Worrell, etc.
We took the advice of Kim in Florida ,and wrote to our state reps using the site she sent.We found it quite easy to use,and recommend all of us on this site,as interested parties do the same. This is a copy of our letter. Thank you Kim,and all. Since our ancestors were brave enough to sail [under atrocious conditions,I might add]to a new world to protect their family's freedoms,we should at least, zip off an e-mail to do the same. Here is the text of our letter: "We are extremely concerned about the possible passage of Bill#A 1390.As genealogists, we recognize that this is only one area that will be effected if this bill passes. Please carefully consider the myriad of ramifications the this bill would have on the public's liberty to have their records open to view and study. The understanding of our past is an important part of planning our future. Jerilyn's ancestors were original settlers of this great state, and they fled their homeland of Great Britain because their liberties were threatened. Please remember our past,as you consider our future. We trust you,as our responsible elected representatives,to look at all sides and vote for the common good. Sincerely, Thomas and Jerilyn Henderson"
