Many Thanks to you Christine for the Census images and to Richard, Robert & Donna and to all of you for your interpretations of them. I think the name of the male[?] person she is living with is Lonnie? or maybe Louis Pringle[ Music Teacher] and he is over 20 as he has been in US since 1880. Wonder if he is related to the lady next door, age 72 and also from England. But I mostly wonder what our little Auntie Ida May age 18--was doing there in 1900..... She is said to have married a man she met there named John J. DeKorte, but not until 1920 when their marriage license was issued in South Dakota ; [???] where one of her two older brothers was probably already living. She also had two younger brothers , one back in Tennessee who became my father in law. Ida May is the main reason I am recording family history....she started doing that before 1929 and had done quite a lot by her death in 1956. I wonder if at 18 she was planning a career on the stage and didn't quite make it across the river into Manhatten. Would explain the "Music Teacher" but NOT the adoption. Aint genealogy FUN???? Thanks again all, Regards Steph Cecil in NC> [email protected]
Hello List Does anyone on the list have easy access to the N J Fed Census for 1900? Or know who would be able to help find the following entry? Someone sent this to a friend but I don't know where he got it. and whose house-hold it was. Ida May Cecil Home in 1900: Jersey City Ward 3, Hudson, New Jersey Age: 18 Estimated birth year: abt 1882 Birthplace: Tennessee Race: White Relationship to head-of-house: Adopted Daughter [?] I believe this is my Husband's Aunt b. 1882 in TN., who, along with his father was orphaned in TN in 1892. We are surprised to see her show up in NJ. although her the man she married in 1920 was said to be from there,... His name was John J. DeKorte and Iwould love to know more about him also. Thanks for any help or suggestions. Steph P. Cecil [email protected]
Hello, This is my first posting here. I am researching my ancestor James W. Leach b. about 1802, he was orphaned, and was raised by Joseph Wright b. 1777, who married Rebecca Bunting b. 1782. Joseph Wright and his wife and children (Lydia, John, Mary Ann, Caroline) left Burlington Co NJ to selttle in Salem, Columbiana Co OH in the Fall of 1809. Salem, OH was a small community founded and settled by Quakers starting in 1803. Joseph Wright and his family were Quakers at Chesterfield MM in Burlington Co., NJ. They left there in 1809. In the Fall of 1809, Joseph Wright was in Salem, OH and went to visit a John Spenser there. I am not sure the relationship between the 2 men. James W. Leach was raised as a foster son by Joseph Wright in Salem, OH. James was with them in the Fall of 1809, so he must have been orphaned in Burlington Co NJ, and then when the move was made to Salem, OH in Fall 1809 he was brought with them. James W. Leach b. about 1802 married in 1826 to Mary Bowker, d/o Isaiah Bowker, who was from Burlington Co NJ, but had settled in Salem, OH. James and Mary Leach married in Salem, OH and both died there, and are buried in Hope Cemetery there. I have researched for 4 years to find the FATHER of James W. Leach, but so far have found nothing. Does anyone remember any LEACH-LEECH-LEITCH family in Burlington Co NJ in the 1790-1809 time frame? My other clue, is that James W. Leach made several census statements, that his MOTHER was born in IRELAND. This might be true or false, as he would have been small when orphaned, so his recollection might be correct, or in error. I would appreciate any help and advice. I had wanted to find the 1800 census of Burlington Co NJ to see if there were any LEACH families listed, but I now know that the census is lost. Is there anyone with access to a TAX ROLL for 1800 in Burlighton Co NJ? Could you look for LEACH in any spelling? Best regards, Lilly Martin

This was posted by a CG (Certified Genealogist) to another List. FYI on this--- Quoted from another list: --------------------------------------------------------------- This is to let you know that the new World War II (TWO) Draft Records on Ancestry.com <http://ancestry.com/> have been scanned wrong and are very misleading. This is the problem I tried to describe to the APG-L list last fall when I had viewed the microfilms at NARA in Washington and is inherent in the way the film was done. For example, see http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbid=1002&iid=PA-2139751-2081&fn=Anthony&ln=Scalise&st=r&pid=3546472 and you will see Anthony Scalise from ERIE, Pennsylvania on the top card and on the bottom is the back of a card with descriptive information and the draft board stamp of PHILADELPHIA. This is not the back of the card that is on top!! In order to microfilm the cards, two cards were photographed at the same time. The front of one was filmed in the same frame as the back of the previous card so that the actual back of the information is cattycorner on the film to its front. I was able to copy the correct back from the microfilm that belonged to Anthony (and with the correct draft board) by copying the bottom of the next frame. Of course in the Ancestry database this continuity has been lost. When I heard that Ancestry was putting the scanned images up I wanted to see if they knew to separate the top and bottom and assign them to their correct corresponding cards. This entails some work but I would rather see the new database taken down than to propagate misinformation and have the unsuspecting masses wonder what their grandfather was doing in Philadelphia (or Alaska, or Arizona, or.) when he never left town. (end of quote from other List) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ancestry subscribers can go to http://www.ancestry.com/community/ , click the "Community" tab and be presented with a problem email form. My NJ lines are BALLENGER, HARDING, and possibly WADE. Quakers who arrived ca 1677 in Burlington Co NJ from England. In reviewing prior notes by researchers of these lines, I found the following notation: "Need to find out what ship Peter Pearce and wife Lydia and son John came to America in." I am assuming they were also Quakers and arrived ca 1670-1690s in NJ. Online searches of ships this era did not locate this family. We are trying to find a tie-in with a female Pearce marriage to a Wade (possibly Robert) ca 1710-1720, on the assumption that our Pearce WADE b. 1720 and married Mary Bal lenger in Goochland Co area of VA by 1744 was named for his mother's family. His family may or may not have been Quaker by the time of his birth in 1720. Many thanks for some help with 1600s Pearces in NJ. Aileen in WA

I have a Marter Fenimore born 1857 as son of Isaac P. and Hannah Fenimore. There is a Marter Fenimore born 1857 in the 1860 census for Beverly, Burlington County, New Jersey, as son in the family of Abraham and Mary Fenimore. Marter, s/o Isaac and Hannah is married to Margaret Slack. I think it is possible that I may have incorrect parents for Marter. Can anyone help me fix this? Thanks, Georgia Whitson

Since we have been talking about houses within the county. You all might want to go to the Library of Congress' Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record. I stumbled accross it or got the url from someone on the list and it has a wealth of information. For example, let us take the Ezra Haines House in Rancocas, Burlington County, NY. <http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/ampage?collId=hhdatapage& fileName=nj/nj0300/nj0369/data/hhdatapage.db&recNum=0& itemLink=D?hh:69:./temp/~ammem_PCRi::@@@mdb=manz,eaa,aap,aaeo,rbaapcbib,aasm,ftvbib,aaodyssey,hh,gottscho,mharendt,bbpi x,bbcards, magbell, berl, lbcoll, rbpebib, calbkbib, tccc, lhbcbbib, cwband, cwnyhs, gmd ,mtaft, cwar, cola, consrvbib, bdsbib, coolbib, coplandbib, curt, dag, musdibib, fsaall, mfd, papr, aep, fine, dcm, cmns, flwpabib, afcreed, cowellbib, toddbib, lomaxbib, ngp, afc wwgbib, haybib, raelbib, gottlieb, mtj, alad, wpa, mal, scsm, mcc, mymhiwebib, mmorse, aip n,ncpm, ncpsbib, afcwip, fawbib, omhbib, pan,vv,wpapos, psbib, pin, presp, lhbprbib, qlt ,ncr, relpet, dukesm, mussm, mesnbib, llstbib, denn, amss, uncall, fpnas, svybib, runyon, wtc, detr, hlaw, lhbumbib, varstg, horyd, mgw, hawp, nawbib, suffrg, nfor> Yes that is all one URL.
