    1. [NJBurlin] NJ Census
    2. Years ago I used to access the NJ Census for 1915 and perhaps other "5" years. Can anyone tell me how I once again accomplish that for NJ, NY and perhaps, PA and Michigan if they had their own Censuses? Many thanks, Nancy Potts

    1. [NJBurlin] Brown-Ridgways, 1700's
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Ridgway, Brown Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/oQB.2ACE/1595 Message Board Post: Hi Burlington researchers, I have a question on my Brown-Ridgway's of Burlington. I've been working on this for awhile so I guess up front is best: Does anyone know who the parents of Richard Brown are? Is it John Brown and Hannah (vice, Ann Stancie), or someone else? I have my Richard Brown, b. abt. 1683, ps. Mansfield Twp, Burlington (1709, Northampton census, lists him age 26), and deceased in 1735 Northampton, Burlington Co, NJ (will, Mar 1733/34; inv Apr 1735). He m.(1) abt. 1709 Mary (ps. Slade), who d. bef. 1720, and Richard Brown m.(2) 1720 Elizabeth Parker, widow of John Powell (Hinshaw, 2:201). If I'm right his father was John Brown, b. abt. 1653 England, and immigrated to NJ abt. 1681. John was a yeoman, gunsmith and Freeman in 1684 at Burlington Co, and d. aft. 1706, pr. Mansfield Twp (constable of Mansfield in 1688; property on Assiscunck Creek, NJA 21:355, etc.) According to Richard's will in 1734, he had two sons (Benjamin-minor, and Richard) and four daughters at the time. Right now I have: 1. Hannah Brown, b. abt. 1710, m. 1727 John Ridgway, s/o Richard and Abigail Stockton, 2. Rachel Brown, b. abt. 1722, m. Josiah Ridgway, s/o Josiah and Sarah unk. 3. Benjamin Brown, b. abt. 1721, m. Elizabeth Ridgway, d/o Josiah and Sarah unk. --------------- Some related posts to my query on the Burlington Board were (but I could discern nothing new): ---------------- Subj: Richard Brown & Mary Slade (?) Brown Date: 26 Aug 2001 Author: Cameron La Follette Said: "Ridgways in the USA" states Rachel's parents were Richard Brown and Mary Slade. (I say but, p249; only says, "Josiah Ridgway, b. 1713-15, d. 1783 m. Rachel Brown." - she may have another page I didn't copy) ---------------------- Subj: Richard Ridgway and Elizabeth Chamberlain Date: 7 Aug 2005 Author: Mike Ridgway Summary; Mike was looking for information on Josiah Ridgway and Rachel Brown (my query may answer a few).

    1. [NJBurlin] Hog Island History
    2. Kathy & Joy
    3. If you type into any search engine the answer to the question is there. Hog Island is where the Philadelphia Airport is now. the Corps of Engineers filled in the space and connected it to the mainland. It is between the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers. Named for the hogs that use to run free on the island. Original name was Quistconck given to it by the Lenape Indians who sold it in 1680 to European settlers. Kathy

    2. I'm very sorry it has come to the point where a few list members have felt the need to quote the original offensive word in replying to the list and seem to feel that we all need to read their comments on the topic. This has continued despite my TWO notices to this list to end it. Discussion of offensive Racial slurs is NOT the purpose of the NJBURLIN list and it will not be allowed to continue. I've placed this list under emergency moderation and will review each and every post before sending it through to the list for the time being. Anyone I find quoting the offensive word from now on will be removed from the list. The subject is CLOSED. Thanks for your cooperation. Joan, admin [email protected]

    3. I live in a county that is 70% African-American and am very aware of the offense that many people will take to using such words. I assume that some people simply are still clueless on some topics. I don't think that the sender meant to hurt anyone's' feelings and is now more aware concerning the topic. Reading the original posting I get the impression that the writer was simply asking if that Hogg Island was the island referenced in the document she found. She thought it was, but wasn't positive. Looking it up on Google doesn't work. Apparently there were dozens of islands with that offensive slang word used as an unofficial name. Surely it should be removed at once as promised and anyone looking for letters in this thread can still look for "Hogg Island". I always thought America had advanced beyond this childish behaviour but obviously you run a stiff anti black campaign. What a shame this has proved such a disappointing list. 1. [NJBurlin] Offensive word used in gateway post -- ADMIN
    2. While I know we can't change history or place names, we also need to be sensitive in our use of words on a list and board. A message came through the gateway this morning which included a term many on our list/board (including me) would find offensive. Just a note to let you know that I've removed the post from the board and initiated the process of having it removed from the list archives--and I've also notified the poster that he can repost his message without using the offensive term. From my reading of the message there was no need to use it anyway--it isn't the proper name of the place being referenced. So, please let's not comment on this on the list--the matter has been addressed. Joan, admin [email protected]
