Thank you, Anita and Barbara, for refreshing my memory. I thought that it was not the pizza shop, as I paid a small fortune for my copy of the book which is now inaccessible to me in my basement. There is a Potts listed in the sketch of the town and the store. He may have been a butcher in some small nitch of my memory. Maybe you can check on that for me, Anita. Anyway, it is delightful to hear about 'home'. Nancy S. The pizza shop to which Anita referred was, in the 1960's, Applegates - it was a grocery store, and the owner was a butcher. Another shop was even older, however. The house, next to the present-day Post Office, was built in 1867. It was "Woolman's Grocery" until 1908, when it became "Stout's Grocery." In 1924 it was sold to William Wallace and became "Wallace's Meat Market." The Post Office was originally a barn for his delivery wagon. In 1945 the structure (which at one time had a porch on the front) was sold to James Courtney, and in 1952 it was converted into a house. The history was gathered by the current owner. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was wrong when I said on 21 Oct 2006 that the pizza place on the main street of Crosswicks was the butcher shop/store owned by Zedekiah McCabe in the late 1800's. I always thought it was but according to the book, Chesterfield Twp Heritage, pg 227, the butcher shop was at a different house. This book has pictures of the old houses of the township and tells who has lived in them. The book is a little confusing to figure out which house they are talking about, but with book in hand, you can identify the old places. It has a wealth of genealogy info, but of course no sources.

I find a Jacob and a William Davis mentioned in Burlington County Quaker records (they don't sound like your Davises but I can't be sure) and I also find a William Davis marrying a Lydia Connaroe at St. Andrew's Episcopal (now St. Mary's) in Burlington. So it would help to know whether your Davises were Quaker or Episcopalian. Joan

Does anyone have a record of a husband and wife, Jacobus and Elizabeth Davis, living in Burlington Co. NJ abt 1750? Elizabeth would have been born between abt 1710-1730. Any clues at all would be appreciated. Thanks, Richard

John and Michael came to America in the 1880’s. If you live in the area you may want to try Sacred Heart RC Church in Mount Holly. They have marriage and baptism records going back to 1850 and served the Lumberton area. I am assuming they were Roman Catholic. Curt Miller
