Just an note - I'm a Thom, living in the UK. My family are all from Northern Ireland (originally Scotland, I think). I was aware that there is a German/Hungarian branch of Thoms, but had never met any. I think that the historical origin of the name is something like this. THOM originated with the nomadic Magyar people of Hungary... Some of migrated northwards to Germany... And henceforth to Norway/Denmark... THOM crossed over to Scotland and Ireland when the Danes, Vikings, Jutes etc. Hence the connection!! I think this is about right - I studied History at university, and got interested in finding out my own roots from that. I know this isn't specifically useful, but I thought the etymology of the name might be of interest! All the best, and good luk with your search :) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
