Bergen County deed indexes were not filmed (at least as far as I know.) They are available at the county level in Hackensack. I was given to understand that they weren't filmed when the deeds were because the index books were too large for their equipment. At some point the county will probably be digitizing both the deeds and the indexes - but I'm pretty sure they haven't started on the old records yet. The deeds in the libers are roughly chronological - that is, they are filed in the order that they were received. A deed could have been signed in August - but if it wasn't brought in and filed until later in the year - it will be in the book for when it was brought in. There is no attempt to organize the recorded deeds by name, by town, or by date. Each deed book is usually about 500 pages or so and each deed is usually about two pages long. I know that isn't very encouraging but... Regards, Joan Joan M. The LDS has 5 films covering 1871. v. Y7-Z7 1870-1871 v. A8-B8 1871 v. C8-D8 1871 v. E8-F8 1871 v. G8-H8 1871-1872 I don't really want to pay to rent all these films. Does anyone know how the deed books are arranged? Is it by date? By name of town? By surname? I believe the deed would have been from August 1871. Does anyone know of the existence of an index anywhere? The LDS catalogue says the index is missing. Thanks, Veronica
