    1. [NJBERGEN] Johannis Schury/Shurrig - error in Schraalenburghrecords

    3. While I'd like to think this doesn't happen, there are errors in the church records - whether they occurred during transcription (unlikely in this case) or in the original writing down, we don't know. Ackerman's genealogy of the Harings lists a first son for second generation Abraham Jans Haring named Jan. It would be expected that Abraham would name a son for his father Jan Pieters Haring - so far, so good. However Ackerman follows the son as *Johannis* Abraham Haring # 3.35 and says he married Annetjen Outwater, and that they joined the Schraalenburgh church in 1733. And indeed the list of members of the Schraalenburgh church does list Abraham Haring and Annetjen Outwater among those joining in that year. In this case it turns out that there is an error in the church records. Following the name Annetjen Outwater (as occurring the least frequently and so requiring the fewest lookups), I find that Annetjen and her husband Johannis Shurrig/Schury baptized five daughters at the church: Catarina in 1731; Maria in 1733; Annetjen in 1735; Elizabeth in 1737; and Rachel in 1739. No record of any sons, nor any record of the daughters marryng in the Schraalenburgh church. So it is safe to presume that Abraham Jans Haring's first son Jan did die young, or at least before marrying, and the Schraalenburgh records err in stating that a couple named Johannis Haring and Annetjen Outwater joined the church in 1733 - it must have been Johannis Schury and Annetjen Outwater who joined at that time.
