Hi Arnold, Thanks for the quick reply. Both John and Gertrude EDSALL (Garret's parents) were born ca. 1790, as their ages in the 1850 and 1860 censuses are 60 and 70, respectively. But, as names run in families, it is quite possible that this Gertrude is the daughter or granddaughter of another Gertrude. I've only just begun to look more closely at the Lydeckers because of Garret L. EDSALL. Our "founding" ancestor Samuel EDSALL lived in NY and NJ and his son John settled in Bergen/Hackensack, although our line is descended from his son Richard, and we wound up in Sussex and Orange counties instead, so I'm less familiar with the Bergen Co. branch and its twigs. Pity the censuses before 1850 don't list family members. I did check out the various Garret Lydeckers in NJ, but haven't yet looked at NY. What other names interest you? Or any idea when she was married? I have several Garret LYDECKERs going back into the mid 1600s on Long Island (New Amsterdam). Among the distaff members of this clan is a Geertie (loosely translatable as Gertrude.) My data suggests she was born ca1760 --- probably too early for your connection. That said, it looks like we are nibbling at the same family. Regards, Arnold
