I am researching JOHN E. COALE & CAROLINE LOUISE ABERCROMBIE. CAROLINE LOUISE is my 1st cousin, 4 times removed according to my FTM relationship calculator. She was the daughter of BRIG. GEN. JOHN JOSEPH ABERCROMBIE, JR. The COALE's had 2 daughters OLIVE (or OLIVIA) and IDA. CAROLINE died in Rutherford in 1919. In 1930 her husband JOHN was living with his daughter OLIVIA and her husband whose name is giving me problems. I cannot find him in any other census trying all sorts of search terms. I am hoping if someone has the 1930 directory they can help me figure out who OLIVIA's husband was. Here they are in 1930. 1930 United States Federal Census Name: Olivia Adame [Olivia Coale] (ADAMS?) Do you know where your relative was buried? If you do you can contact the cemetery to learn more about the burial. I learned about, and eventually met, some of my genealogy cousins by working backwards. I was trying to determine where my grandparents were buried, followed some clues to Brooklyn, and contacted the cemeteries in the area. As it turned out, there was a family plot of sorts, and there had been a burial in the previous two years. I contacted the funeral home that was listed in the records (which was in New Jersey), the one that took care of all the arrangements for the most recent funeral, and was able to learn the names of the sons who had made the arrangements with the funeral home. A search of the White Pages on-line turned up a phone number (in a third state). Not only did I find my grandparents' plots, but I was able to identify one entire branch that ! no one in my immediate family remembered! If you do not know where your relative was buried you might be able to target a geographic area around his last known address and search the cemeteries there. George Washington Memorial Park is one of the largest in the area (although I do not know if that is the cemetery of choice for the residents of Emerson) and their records are computerized. You may be able to learn something by calling them. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I thought about many of those things and actually suspect that it may have been an elderly home or something similar; he would have been eighty six and I don't know that he actually lived there very long. His wife died in 1990, seven years earlier, in the Bronx, so I imagine at some point he realized he couldn't live alone in the Bronx and maybe went to the nearest place across the GW Bridge - perhaps to be close to family. There are countless "Budd" surnamed people in Bergen County, so perhaps one is a son/grandson. I know he had twins but don't know names or sexes, or whether they both lived. I have had a lot of trouble finding obits for the folks in my family who had less money. Obituaries would probably save the day though in many of these cases because the records sometimes are difficult to even read. By the way, I bit the bullet and already paid at the state level... guess I will have my fingers crossed about it. I found out, since yesterday, that I can use ProQuest remotely, but didn't have much success there and couldn't even find either of my grandfather's obituaries (1997 and 2007), so I guess they still have a long way to go to get ALL the newspapers. Thanks for all the input! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I also accessed the NJ Star Ledger and Bergen Evening Record - again, nothing found. Keep in mind that families must pay the papers to publish an obituary, so not every decedent has one. Additionally, there is no online resource that has ALL US newspapers. Before I would enrich the State of NJ by $25 for a death certificate, I would call an Emerson town official (town clerk, tax assessor, postmaster, etc.). If Charles was a long time resident there, someone should know him. However, it's up to you, and I wish you the best of luck! There is a researcher in New Jersey who will get the death record quickly from the NJ Department of Health. However, it is expensive at $55. You will need to know the exact date of death and mother's maiden name. The certificate will not include the cause of death. May I suggest a few alternate approaches? You may wish to contact the Bergen County Surrogate's Court at Hackensack to inquire if this person left a will. It will provide information on living relatives. Sometimes, the certificate of death (including cause of death) is attached to the probate record. You are entitled to acquire a copy of the will and related documentation as a matter of public record. If you can find the obituary of this individual, it may include the name / location of the funeral director and place of burial. The funeral director may be willing to tell you the name of the individual who made the "final" arrangements. Don't be afraid to call the funeral home. I have found them to be extremely polite and helpful. Next, contact the cemetery to verify the interment. Ask them who owns the plot. The cemetery should always have an AFFIDAVIT OF OWNERSHIP on file. If they refuse to give you this information, ask them if they would be willing to forward a letter, written by you, to the plot owners. Also, ask them the names of all individuals who are buried in the same plot as your ancestor. Good luck in your genealogical endeavors! Beverly G.
