With grateful thanks to Ethel Konight and Pat Wardell, I am pleased to announce that a portion of the Overseers of the Poor records for Franklin Township, Bergen Co., NJ is now available on Dutch Door Genealogy. They're under Civil Records as 1787 Overseers of the Poor Records, then Negro Abandonments. As of 1804 in NJ, children born of a slave mother were not slaves. However the child had to be registered with the town, which would then pay the slave owner for the care of the child - boys were bound till age 25 and girls to age 21. I find it hard to believe that the town would pay when someone was of an age to be a working benefit to the slave owner, but the law as quoted does not specify. Would the owner of the slave get work from the slave's child *plus* be paid by the town for the same child? I'd love to know more about how paupers, pauper children, orphans, and these free/but-not-really negro children were regarded by the civil authorities, and hope that if you have information, you'll chime in. Author: hudeky Surnames: Terry and Lohsen Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newjersey.counties.bergen/3303/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am looking for any information on a George Terry born in England about 1853 and died in Jersey City, New Jersey about 1905. These dates are not definite. The birth date was obtained from the 1900 census and the death date by a recollection of how old someone was when he died so I am not sure of them. He married Sophia Lohsen and had 7 children (George, Maud or Martha, Harold, Franklin, Ida May, Jennie and Anna). I believe 2 of them, George and Maud or Martha may have been from a previous wife. Verbal history is that he was hit by a street car in Jersey City, New Jersey about 1905. The 1900 census says he was in this country since the age of 5 in 1858. I find no immigration record to match. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I've "rescued" three old photographs belonging to the GILDERSLEEVE and PRATT Families. The first two photographs are of Johanna Frances GILDERSLEEVE PRATT and were taken at the Hamilton Studio in Laredo, Texas. They are identical photographs one with the date, Jan 28 1898 and the other Jan 25 1898 with one noting that Johanna is 62 years old at the time the photograph was taken. One of the photographs also identifies her as "Mrs. H. B. PRATT of Laredo, TX". The third photograph is one of Paul PRATT Jr. and was taken at the Campbell & Co. Studio in Richmond, Virginia. This photograph was probably taken in the 1890's with Paul noted as 2 1/2 months old at the time the photograph was taken. There is also another photograph which I believe may be connected to this family, it is one of Louise WYLIE taken at a studio in Columbia, South Carolina with indications that Louise's Mother was a PRATT by birth. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding the family: Joanna Frances GILDERSLEEVE b. 25 Jan 1836 in Charleston, SC to parents Benjamin GILDERSLEEVE (b. 5 Jan 1791 in New Canaan, CT) and Emma Louisa LANNEAU (b. 24 Feb 1804 in Charleston, SC). Joanna married Reverend Henry Barrington PRATT (b. 26 May 1832 in Darien, GA) on 7 Nov 1860 in Richmond, VA and together they had 7 children including, Benjamin Gildersleeve; Catherine "Kate" Studwick; Louise "Lou" Gildersleeve; Paul; Maria Howard; Henry Basil; and Juanita PRATT all born between 1862 and 1875 in Hillsboro, NC; Sugar Creek, NC; and Columbia South America. Joanna died 13 Aug 1904 in Portsmouth, VA. Paul J. PRATT Jr. b. 2 Sept 1894 in Richmond, VA to parents Paul J. PRATT and Belle Algeo NEWELL. Paul married Adelaide ELY on 29 Jan 1914 in Rutherford, NJ and he died 16 Jul 1967 in Lake Worth, FL. Census records provide the following information regarding the family: 1900 census of Washington Township, NJ: Paul PRATT, age 31, born Aug 1868, married 8 years, born NC, parentds born GA/SC, a Farmer Belle PRATT, wife, age 32, born Dec 1867, married 8 years, 5 children/4 living, born MD, parents born Ireland/England Paul PRATT, son, age 5, born Sept 1894, born VA Algeo PRATT, son, age 4, born Oct 1895, born VA Janet PRATT, dau, age 2, born Aug 1897, born VA Marie PRATT, dau, age 1, born Nov 1898, born VA Henry B.
