My grandfather, Thomas J. Prime, was mayor of Bergenfield from 1918-1922 and after that he and various family members were deeply involved in Bergen County Democratic and Republican political circles, as well as with the Bergen Record and the Twin-Boro News, among others. My father, TJ's youngest son Stephen Prime, was at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked, which would have been reported in the area papers as well. Does anyone know if the Bergen Record is available to researchers outside the state via Interlibrary Loan? I work for a major daily newspaper in Louisiana, which possible could assist in the process, and would be willing to trade lookup "credits" and time in return for anyone willing to look for stories relating to TJ's term in office and my father in the weeks immediately after Pearl Harbor. I can also supply specific dates to look for other articles. My father's comings and goings in World War II were reported because his brother was a reporter at the paper and later its advertising director. Thanks in advance, John Andrew Prime Shreveport, LA

Thanks Regina for clearing up that Effie (Euphemia) was the dau. of Rev. James and Euphemia , not Rev. John T. and his second wife. - I also agree that it is unlikely Euphemia was idiotic and it probably referred to her sister. Anna. or the laborer on the next line. However, Louisa and her three children were bur. at Pascack per Ackerman and Goff: I Noticed that my footnotes did not come through. So here they are: Demarest, Voorhis D. (1964), The Demarest Family. Vol. 1 #7-1027, #8-1604, #8-1605, #8-1606, #7-51 and #8-55 Pascack Reformed Church and Cemetery Records, Park Ridge, NJ. copied and checked by Herbert S. Ackerman and Arthur J. Goff, privately printed, 1946 p. 82 "John Oscar Demarest July 17, 1847 June 14, 1867 Anna Louisa Demarest Aug 31, 1838 Nov 26, 1874 Euphemia W. Demarest wife of James Demarest Jr. age 21-10-17 days May 5, 1863 Anna Louisa Sullivan wife of John T. Demarest 42-2-1 days May 17, 1856" Anna Louisa Sullivan Demarest's death was not reported in Washington Township Register of Births Marriages and Deaths. I also checked Genealogy Bank and no newspapers reported her death. Although his wife died in 1856 - obviously he did not loose 9 children on the same day or they too would have been buried in Pasack Cem. and his three children survived their mother. Perhaps the tragedy referred to was the loss of his wife and two children and the commitment of a third child during is pastorship at Pascack. Certain it is that the Rev. Demarest only had three children that ever appeared in the census records or church baptismal records. It seems possible that there was some mention made in the conversation with the census taker of first daughter Anna Louise, who unfortunately is listed in the 1860 and the 1870 census records as an inmate of the NJ State Asylum in Ewing, labelled "insane". Although the Demarest genealogy says she is buried in Pascack, it also says that she died in 1874. It seems unlikely that she would be buried in Pascack since the family left the Pascack area in 1867 when he gave up the pastorate. Second daughter Euphemia married a Rev. James Demarest, the first pastor at the 2nd Reformed Church in Hackensack. Little Effie, the 7 year old in the 1870 census was Rev. James and Euphemia's child - she never married. Rev. James eventually married twice more after Euphemia's death. However the second time wasn't until 1872, by which time the grandparents and little Effie undoubtedly had a tight bond. The Demarest genealogy says that the Rev. John's granddaughter Euphemia died single in Middletown in 1920, and I wonder where she was in 1880. It seems highly unlikely that there was any reason for Euphemia to be labelled "Idiotic" (the census does say that!) since she went on to marry a well-educated clergyman, but unfortunately died at age 22. Son John Oscar died of TB in 1867, the last year the family was at Pascack - there is a NYTimes obit for him. A search for newspaper references hasn't so far turned up anything. I have requested a death record for Rev. John T's wife Anna Louisa. I wonder whether anything would be learned from a death record for daughter Anna. The earliest reference to Rev. John T. Demarest is a biography in the History of the Classis of Paramus - this can be read online through Google Books. It was published in 1902, five years after the death of Rev. John. It says: "The parsonage was built without delay. In this home Dr., Demarest was called upon to suffer the greatest sorrows of his life. The remains of his wife and children lie buried in our (Pascack) cemetery." My original query dated 12 May asked it there was any truth to the story "In 1856, Dr. John T. Demarest, minister of the Pascack Reformed Church, came home to find his wife and nine children brutally murdered." Arlene Goff sent the 1850, 1860, and 1870 census records proving John T Demarest had three children. John Terhune Demarest married (1) Anna Louise Sullivan and they had three children. Anna died 17 May 1856, buried Pascack Churchyard and John married (2) Jane Elizabeth Polhemus 9 June 1857. As of this writing, no proof has been found for any part of the story. I found several records of murders with people connected to the Pascack Church and cemetery in the 'Diary of Lizzie Ann Campbell', pub. in the Archivist, a quarterly publication of the Genealogical Society of Bergen County, NJ. I wonder if this is how the murder story began. Were these murders conflated into a story that grew better with every retelling. 13 Oct 1867. Uncle William and Aunt Caty were murdered with their own axe in their bed, and were not found until Wed morning. 17 Oct 1867. Uncle William and Aunt Caty (Haty) were buried. 18 Oct 1869. Piet Stokems was found murdered in the field. The squire came and chose the jurie and they were in session all the afternoon and then they adjourned until in the morning. Suspicion rests very hard on young Dave Acker. 20 Dec 1869. Mr. Dave Eckerson got his sentence for twenty years to the states prison at hard labor. Justice was swift in those days. In two days, the body was found, jury was seated and sentence pronounced. Regards, Ethel Kay Konight ========================== Original message Subj. John T Demarest, wife and nine children murdered? In a message dated 5/12/2008 ETHEL KK writes: Many moons ago, I went on a tour of the Pascack Reformed Church and Cemetery, located at 65 Pascack Road, Park Ridge, Bergen County, NJ. and during a tour of the cemetery, the guide told a story about the Rev. Demarest coming home in 1856 and finding his wife and nine children murdered. I forgot about this story until last week when this story is repeated in a local paper The Pascack Valley Community Life on 7 May 2008 with quotes by Carl Weil, the church historian. "In 1854, Dr. John T. Demarest became the first full-time minister of the Pascack Reformed Church, Weil says, barely audible. And in 1856, Demarest came home to find his wife and nine children brutally murdered." In a separate article by Carl Weil he writes "In 1857, John Demarest received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from Rutgers College and remained at Pascack until 1867. He died in New Brunswick, NJ on January 30, 1897 and was buried at New Prospect, NY." _http://www.pascackreformedchurch.org/history/_ (http://www.pascackreformedchurch.org/history/) I checked the Demarest Genealogy and could not find this story mentioned. I phoned Carl Weil, the church historian and he could not answer any of my questions. He did not know the name of the Reverends wife or the names of the murdered children. I mentioned that ten people murdered must have been mentioned in the local newspapers. He said someone checked and did not find the story in the newspaper. Is this a true story? What is the name of his wife? Is there any documentation for any part of this story? Is Dr. John T Demarest listed in the Demarest Genealogy? If he died on 30 Jan 1897 and buried at New Prospect, NY, is there a record of his death? Regards, Ethel Kay Konight **************Get trade secrets for amazing burgers. It says: "The parsonage was built without delay. In this home Dr., Demarest was called upon to suffer the greatest sorrows of his life. The remains of his wife and children lie buried in our (Pascack) cemetery." I agree with Wendy and Ethel, there seems to be no evidence that Rev. John Terhune Demarest had 9 children - His first wife did die 17 May 1856 and is bur. at Pascack but her three known children survived her, and all three are bur. in Pascack. According to the Demarest Genealogy #7-1027 (1625): John Terhune Demarest son of Samuel S. Demarest and Annatie Terheune was b. 20 Feb 1813 and bap. at S. Demarest, age 37, had a wife, Sullavan, age 36, and three children: Allen L (12), Emphema (9) and John C. (3). Rev. John T. Demarest married Jane Elizabeth Polhemus on June 9, 1857. On the 1860 Census, Rev. John is 47, his wife Jane E. is 40. Euphemia is 17 and John O. is 12. In 1870, John is 57, Jennie is 50 and Effie is 7. His eldest child (Allen) is no longer living with the family by 1860. 3. Other children may have been born between 1850 and 1860 but deceased before the 1870 census. (But I do not believe the family could have produced 8 children during that time). 4. Effie, age 7 in 1870, is named in memory of her deceased sister. The earliest reference to the murder story (that I could find) appeared in A History of the Classis of Paramus of the Reformed Church in America, pub 1902, pp. 353-354, published 1902. Dear Roots Searcher, Well, I enjoyed reading your list of names of people I'm probably related to at least here and there. But without a VanBuskirk in the group, I'm not much help. Any information on Thomas VanBusirk (son of Laurens VanBuskirk and Jennetje Jans), or his son Michael VB, or his son Isaac VB (fought in the Revolution) or his son Issac VB in PA, or his son John Stillwell VanBuskirk in Indiana (my Great Great Grandfather) is always welcome here. The name Benjamin is not a common name in either the Courter or Ackerman families but one of the children of Benjamin's brother, Abraham, was named Benjamin. 1850 US, OH, Clermont, Union, p 959, Roll 667, dwelling 2924, family 2947, Benjamin Courter age 34 a farmer with $350 b NJ, Christiana age 33 b NJ, Sarah I. or J. age 12 b NJ, Mary Age 3, b NJ, Harvey Sutton age 24, Merchant b OH, William Cord age 23, blacksmith b OH, Richard Munnell age 21 a clerk. Migrated to Australia from Hamburg, May 1857 aboard the "Peter Godeffroy" He was conscripted into the army and served as a bandsman . This is all we know about his German origins. Should anyone know of the Gerecke family name, especially from Brunswick going back to that time, any information would be appreciated, as it could help me trace his roots. He died in or near Livingston co, NY between 1850 and 1860; she died in Independence, KS in 1889. Five known children: a son (Charles), two daughters (Maria and Jane, order unknown), another son (James), a third daughter (Mary or M. Helen). I find a marriage record in Bergen co, in 1818, for Peter B White and Phebe Starr. This seems early for mine - the records indicate my Phebe was born abt 1805 and Charles was born in 1823 - but I'd like to know more about them.
