I have been studying the RUTAN line for about a year now and have quite a bit of material. My ultimate goal was the true name of Dorothy RUTAN and her parents on a piece of pater. Thus, my quest in this matter. Perhaps we can do some good for both of our needs together? 1. [NJBERGEN] John T. Demarest, wife and nine children murdered?
    2. Regina Haring
    3. In response to Ethel's query as to the accuracy of the story of the murder of John T. Demarest's wife and nine children as it appears on the website of the Pascack Reformed Church, I have to report that the story is a total fabrication. Rev. Demarest and his wife had three children, and while the wife and children all died prematurely, they died at different times, in differing circumstances, and not violently. The family's story can be read on the Dutch Door website, under "Other Historical". 1. Re: [NJBERGEN] Van Winkle Murders
    2. An article entitled MURDER "Hawthorne New Jersey 1664-1964 Tercentenary Souvenir Book" One of the most brutal murders that occurred in this part of the state took place on January 9, 1850 when Judge John S. Van Winkle and his wife Jannetie were literally hacked to death in the bedroom of their home on Goffle Road. Judge Van Winkle, descendant of one of the pioneer families in the county, was the owner of much of the farm property at the Goffle and consequently employed a number of farm hands. One of these was John Johnston who had been reprimanded and fined by the judge for being drunk. Johnston being familiar with the layout of the house, secured a ladder and a meat cleaver to carry out his foul deed. Climbing up to the bedroom window on the outside he entered the room where the couple was asleep and proceeded to hack them to pieces. Mrs. Van Winkle died instantly but the Judge managed to struggle with his assailant and eventually Johnston leaped out of the window and tried to escape by going over to the brook which ran in front of the house. He wandered north as far as Rock Road where he left the brook and headed for the Erie station at what is now Glen Rock. the agent here, sensing that something was wrong, delayed the murderer long enough, as no train was due, so that the aroused neighbors of the Goffle following the footprints in the snow soon caught up with the culprit and took him to the County Jail in Paterson. Johnston was tried and sentenced to be hung, which was carried out on April 30, 1850, in the yard of the Passaic County Jail. A gallows had been erected and large number of witnesses were present to see the first hanging that took place in Passaic County. ekk comment: Justice was swift in those days. 'Dastardly Deed' occurred on January 9, 1850. Three and a half months later, on April 30, he was hanged. 2. Thanks to all of you who replied regarding the Van Winkle murders! I've been overwhelmed this week but am looking forward to all you've sent. Still wanting to identify that Bogert family -- anyone with any thoughts about that? I had thought that the names mentioned in the diary equalled proximity to these Bogerts, but obviously if the Van Winkle murders took place in Hawthorne that it not so. My g'g'g'grandfather, Abraham Terhune, is mentioned, and that family did live in HoHoKus. Ree, the Hopper entries are these two: "Ellen Hopper died March 21 1843" "Made a new pot metal sleigh for Albert Hopper 1846" Thanks again, everyone! Eastern Daylight Time, njbergen-request@rootsweb.com writes: This is a terrific effort, and thanks for posting updates as you go along, as you are now. The thing we absolutely need is source references for everything. Primary sources are best, of course, but in their absence secondary sources are helpful in that they're a starting point for primary source corroboration (though definitely shouldn't be taken as gospel unless they include primary source citations, no matter the reputation or past work of the author). I'm sure you agree that much incorrect material has been posted on the Internet and everywhere else. That material gets perpetuated, and once the viral infection has spread it is impossible to eradicate. If anyone shares any genealogical information with anyone, including family members, and doesn't note/know the original sources, the possibility of errors needs to be noted big bold and in caps on every single page of a document. ----------------- Nancy: I totally agree. All of the biographies I am posting have the source at the bottom of the biography. If there are any that are missing, let me know, as that would be just an oversight on my part. All biographies are from the same book at this point in time. 1. Re: [NJBERGEN] Bergen County biographies
    2. Denise, This is a terrific effort, and thanks for posting updates as you go along, as you are now. Thanks again! Then later: "Johnson executed for the murder of John Van Winkle and wife April 30 1850" Does anyone know anything more about these murders? Hi Nancy, I was born in Hawthorne, Passaic County and the local story was of the Van Winkle murders. Yes, there was a murder in the very old sandstone house on Goffle Road opposite the 'duckpond'. From memory, it was an elderly couple murdered by the 'handyman'. If you find the story, please put it on line.
