Fort Lee became Fort Lee in 1904. Earlier it was part of Ridgefield Twp, which was set off from Hackensack Twp in 1871. The city of Hackensack does not appear to have had city directories prior to about 1907. I do not know if Fort Lee would have been listed in the directories that late. However, neither Fort Lee nor Ridgefield Twp appear to have had any city directories of their own. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Thank you so much Regina for posting the maps. My ancestors, August and Ellen (ENGLAND) BACH and children, lived in Norwood, Closter and Alpine from abt 1865 to 1905. Are you familiar enough with Norwood to suggest where August Bach might have lived in 1870. Based on the 1870 census, he lived quite near Charles Nordhoff, the magazine editor. August was a farm laborer. Many of his neighbors were boatman, fisherman, carpenters, and coachmen. Also, a merchant named Kohler lived nearby. . The early censuses for this area did not include any street names. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to identify the specific location where individuals lived in 1870 - 1900 in this area?
