Surnames: Start, Kliewerda Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/gRB.2ACI/1755.2 Message Board Post: Based on the 1930 census images, Richard Start married at age 23 (he was 41 in 1930), so that would make it about 1917. William Kleiwerda shows up as Wm. R., age 27, married at age 23 to Hattie, probably an American version of Heiltje who is also 27. This places their marriage about 1926 or 27. Their son Jacob is 2 years 6 months old at the time of the census : 4 April 1930. They are living at 68 Cottage Street, Midland Park, Bergen County, New Jersey. This was a rented house for $30. per month. William worked as a driver for a laundry service, for wages. He was not a veteran. He and his parents were all born in New Jersey. Midland Park is right next to Ridgewood. There was and still is, a heavy population of Dutch in Midland Park. If you give me your email address I will send you the two census records, and a URL to read some news articles on the Dutch in New Jersey that were just published on 8 October 2006. I also can put you in touch with someone who does a lot of research for Dutch families. Dorothy Dotpoet@aol.com

I didn't know any of these people, though I suspect that Steve Florence was the brother of Mimi, who was in my class at RHS ('73). If they were RHS graduates, perhaps the high school has contacts for the various classes, or perhaps you know someone who's helped put reunions together. good luck! Dear Gilia, Here is a beginning! On 5 June 1917 Richart Start registered with his Draft Board and claimed that he should not have to serve in World War I because he had to support his wife and one child. He said he was 27 years old and that he had been born on 25 October 1889. He was a natural-born citizen and had been born in Hohokus, New Jersey. In 1917 Richard was employed in Midland Park, New Jersey. HIs employer's name was Henry J. Westbrock, and Richard worked as an embroiderer of flannels. His physical description was "medium height, medium build, blue eyes, brown hair, no physical defects". His Draft Board was located in Franklin Township, Bergen County, New Jersey.
