Items announcing marriages and deaths, from the columns so headed in the Bergen County Democrat, beginning 27 Dec 1861. This newspaper was published weekly, on Fridays, at Hackensack, Bergen County, N.J. This listing was made by Patricia A. Wardell, beginning January 1991, from microfilm reels of issues of the newspaper in the Johnson Public Library, Hackensack, NJ and the library of Bergen Community College, Ridgewood, NJ. Not every issue is included in the microfilm (probably just those in existence); and not every existing issue contained marriage and death columns. Although I have tried to be as accurate as possible, apologies are made for errors. Anyone familiar with using microfilmed newspapers (especially ones over 100 years old) knows that often the films are not as legible as one would wish, either because of poor filming or because the newspaper itself is not legible (poor print quality; folds or tears in the paper, foxing on old newsprint, etc.) Where an entry was questionable, I have drawn attention by enclosing the suspected character(s) in square brackets with a question mark ( [J.?] ). Where a character or characters are missing or completely illegible, I have so indicated by using a long dash enclosed in square brackets ( [-] ). I have used ellipses (...) to indicate that there was more to a particular entry than I have transcribed here. I have excluded some information that was not deemed useful for genealogical purposes. For instance, a few death notices included information about the time and place of the funeral, while others, following the custom of the time, included flowery memorial verses, etc. In general, I have included only marriages and deaths recorded in the particular columns so headed in the newspaper. Before 1865, the paper printed very little local news. Beginning about 1865, some local items appear, and eventually this local news reportage evolved into specific columns headed by the name of the community. The local community columns often contain items relating to births, marriages and deaths. In general, I have not attempted to read these local columns for births, marriages and deaths. However, occasionally I have noticed and included here an item from one of these local news columns. These particular items are here distinguished by being preceded by an asterisk (*). The date of the heading is the newspaper issue date. 27 Dec 1861 Married, in Coytesville, on Christmas evening, by Rev. Thank you so much for your help!
I would like to know what newspaper may have shown an obituary of Woodcliff Lake resident Samuel Burrage Reed, sometime after 1905 when he apparently published his last book. He was born in Meriden, New Haven Co. Connecticut 07 Jan 1834, so he would have been 71 or more when he died. He does not appear in the 1910 census, but his wife Elizabeth, daughter Elizabeth S., and son Lowerre still live there. Thanks for any leads you may be able to provide. Carol Boggs

You have to ask to see them. We researched a death in 1911 there.

Can anyone tell me if there are city directories for Bergen County for the town of Oakland, or would Oakland be included in another larger city's directory? I'm looking for the time frame of 1967-1974 in particular. Does anyone happen to have access to any? Thank you. I am not from NY but it seems easy to re-locate to NJ. He may have been moved because of a bank merger (Corn Exchange Bank - Chemical Bank). There is a family history in Ft. Lee, NJ. Without an obit, I would conclude there was no family contacted about his death.

There was no listing for John Dersch in the directories for that time either. Was he living with a married daughter or perhaps in a nursing home so he did not show up? When did he come to New Jersey from New York? The Record(of Hackensack) might have an obituary, but a date of death would make it easier to find.
