I started my family's Newkirk genealogy and cannot find much information at all about my great-grandfather, John Henry Newkirk. I'm having more success with ancestors further back! He was born probably in Bergen February 2, 1841. His parents were Jacob Newkirk ( born: 11/26/1807) of Bergen and Elizabeth (Brinkerhoff of Ridgefield Park NJ)(born: 9/23/,1810. John Henry N. was married March 19, 1866 to Emma C. Coe of NY (I think Rockland County). They had 7 or 8 children, one of whom, Frank, is my grand-father. I would love to know when John died and where. His last child was born about 1882, so it is sometime after that. Did he serve in the Civil War? I think he outlived Emma. I have no date of her death, or where either. Any help???? THANKS! Marilyn Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Fowler--the names are in alphabetical order. The monument's wording implies he died at Camp Merritt--something like, "in our nation's service at Camp Merritt." Would be glad to go back with a camera--was in a hurry this AM, and just wanted to see if he were there. Those were big "Spanish flu" days at military camps--did his obit mention that? If you want to follow up, now knowing he died in Bergen County, you could get a death certificate from the state, or I could check for a local obit next time I'm at the Hackensack Library. The name is William Carroll Fowler. He would have died June 20, 1918. This is my Dad's Uncle. The family story was that Uncle Willie died while working on the Panama Canal. But everywhere we looked we couldn't find him. Then we found an obituary that said he was at Camp Merritt. If you could find his name on the Monument then we can tell the true "family story".I know for one my Dad will be excited to hear this news. 3. forwarded with permission. David Samuelsen -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [NY-CEMETERIES] Staten Island Quarantine Cemetery Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2007 20:23:15 -0500 From: Vanessa Burzynski <vaburzynski@earthlink.net> Genealogy community can help provide a dignified re-interrment of immigrants exhumed from Staten Island Quarantine Cemetery, buried from 1799-1858. Friends of Abandoned Cemeteries of Staten Island NY has sent a plea for letters of support for the proper re-interrment of the immigrant remains that were EXHUMED from a municipal parking lot once the site of the NYC Quarantine Hospital/cemetery. This particular NYC Quarantine station operated from 1799-1858. The immigrants who came to the USA during this time as well as those with disease living in the NYC Metropolian area and were ill (as many were) passed through the S.I. Quarantine Hosp and ultimately many died and were buried at the cemetery now a MUNICIPAL PARKING LOT. These human remains were EXHUMED in 2006. They are now held at a facility located in Brooklyn in storage boxes. Friends of Abandoned Cemeteries has offered a large section of a historic cemetery that we maintain for the proper reinterrment of these HUMAN remains. Without letters of support from you the genealogy community, these remains will be PUT BACK INTO THE PARKING LOT! Paved over once again and forgotten. Please, we ask that you take 1 minute of your time, send a letter of support to: SICemetery@aol.com . Support the reinterrment to Staten Island Cemetery. Time is once again running out for these unfortunate travelers. We in the genealogy community have accumulated their information, now we must provide to them final dignity. Your letter of support could make this possible. Please send a letter of support today to SICemetery@aol.com
