    1. Re: [NJBERGEN] Folly, Smith Van Blarcom, Fisher
    2. Pat Wardell
    3. Sue -- Thank you for posting those Smith wills. I have been following this discussion, but so far have had little to add, so haven't posted. I think I can identify the Hannah Fisher who married Albert Smith (and who was the author of one of those wills). Here is her family as I have it (I would appreciate any additions, corrections, etc.) -- Pat ------------------------- David Fisher, son of Michael Fisher & Maria -?-, m. Elizabeth (Achenbach?), dau. of (prob) John George Achenbach & Annatje Van Buskirk David Fisher was b. about 1764; d. after 13 April 1826; before 5 Jan 1827 prob. Ramsey, Franklin Twp., Bergen Co., NJ Elizabeth Achenbach was b. 3 June 1764; d. between 1 Nov 1854 & 24 May 1855 age 90, prob. Ramsey, Hohokus Twp. Her funeral was from the Saddle River Lutheran Church, after 1 November 1854 and before 24 May 1855.1 The will of David Fisher, (weak of body) of the Township of Franklin, was dated 13 April 1826 and proven 9 January 1827 in Bergen County. He mentioned first that he wished to receive a good Christian burial and that all his debts and funeral expenses be paid. Wife Elizabeth in addition to her dower rights was to receive the use of all household goods and furniture, during her widowhood, (except those herein disposed of). Sons Michael and David all tenements and real estate (subject to the right of dower of my wife, their mother). If they want to divide the land, David to have the tract with the old homestead. "Michael to have his share of apples from out of the orchard till he shall have apples of his own." Sons to receive all horses, wagons, harnesses, and other farming utensils and stock (except wool wife shall want for her use). Three daughters Maria, Hannah, and Catharine $15.00 each, one year after my death paid by sons. Remainder after death of wife to five children share and share alike. The executors were his trusty friends Christian Wanamaker and John Mandingo and the witnesses were Peter Westervelt and David Christie (signed with his mark). David Fisher signed with his mark.[David Fisher will (1827), Bergen County Will Book C: 169.]1 Since the daughters received only a small amount of money, and no outsets were mentioned, it is very likely that they were all already married and had received their shares; their husband's have not been identified.1 The old homestead, was undoubtedly the property in Franklin Township, David had inherited from his father Michael Fisher's will dated 6 January 1802 and probated 9 June 1802. From that will David inherited "the south part of my farm, being the part on which I now dwell, per survey by John D. Harin[g], on March 15, 1796" also "all my horses, horned cattle, sheep and live stock; bed, cupboard, wagon, weaving loom and other utensils." [Michael Fisher Will (1802) New Jersey Will 3229B.] His brother Michael was to receive the other half of the property, and the two of them were to pay their five brothers or their heirs and one sister $15 each. After the death of Mary all were to share equally in the estate.[Michael Fisher probate file (1802) No. 176, Bergen County Surrogate's office.]1 ---children of David Fisher & Elizabeth Achenbach: * Maria Fisher, b. about 1780--1811 * Hannah Fisher, b. about 1780-1811; d. after 17 March 1864; m. 1. Re: [NJBERGEN] folly smith vanblarcom
    2. Hi Judy, Good to hear from you again! Knowing positively, though I really suspected as much, that the John I'm looking for was not the same John who was married to Abigail VanBlarcon is a big help. Part of my dilemma comes from knowing that in 1860 David Wanamaker, his wife Maria Smith (my 3x's great grandparents) and their daughter were enumerated with a Hannah Smith, who happened to be a nearby neighbor of Adam Folley and his family but not knowing how this Hannah was related. My goal is actually trying to figure out Maria's parents. Garret A. Smith and Rachel Hopper had a daughter Maria, who married Jacob Valentine. Edward Smith and Annetje (Annie) Tebow had a daughter Maria but she and her parents drop completely out of the records I have found after her sister Abigail was born, unless of course she turns out to be my Maria. I honestly was half convinced she was until I rediscovered that census record showing Maria and family with Hannah Smith. I know somewhere there is going to be a little piece of information that will lead me to the rest. You have shared so much with me, maybe the following information will help you. Here are the wills of two Hannah Smiths. The first I believe to be Hannah Folley Smith, she was the wife of John Smith. The second is Hannah Fisher Smith, second wife of Albert Smith, brother of John A Smith. In the name of God, Amen: I Hannah Smith now of the city of Paterson in the County of Passaic and State of New Jersey and the widow of John Smith, Late of the County of Bergen, now deceased....this is my last will and testament. Item I give and Bequeath unto my Grand Daughter Mary Banghart the wife of George Banghart of the City of Paterson....all my Lands, Tenemants, Hereditaments and Real Estate whatsoever and wheresoever, and all my Right, Title and Interest in any real estate whatsoever which I may have or be entitled to at the time of my Decease either in Law or Equity. Together with all my Goods and Chatels, personal property or money's which have heretofore been devised to me by Will by any and every person or persons whatsoever, which I am now entitled to or which I may be possessed of at the time of my Decease. And Lastly, I do hereby appoint my trusty friend George Banghart Executor of this my Last Will and Testament. Signed, Sealed, published and declared by the said Hannah Smith to be her Last Will and Testament in the presence of us this twenty sixth day of January A.D. Eighteen hundred and sixty. 1. [NJBERGEN] folly smith vanblarcom
    2. I just looked at Pat Wardell notes and this John A. Smith son of Albert Smith could not have married Hannah Folly because he was married to Abigail VanBlarcom and she did not die until 1866. Prospect Methodist Church, by David Bartine, Abigail Van Blarcom, dau. of John Van Blarcom & Rebecca Tebow. John A. Smith was b. abt. Nov 1783; d. 7 Mar 1848, ae 64.5.-; buried Union Cem., Waldwick, NJ. Abigail Van Blarcom was b. 15 Sep 1786; d. 30 Apr 1866, ae 79.7.15; buried Union Cemetery, Waldwick, NJ In the marriage record, they were both of Franklin Township. John A. Smith probably ran a sawmill at Allendale by 1827. Their cemetery inscriptions at the Waldwick Union Cemetery were on the Lewis Van Blarcom monument. In the 1840 Federal Census, they were listed between William Shannon and Isaac I. Storms. This still leaves the mystery of Albert VanBlarcom, grandson of William Folly d before codicil of 1831. I have him as a dgt of Elizabeth Folly and a ? VanBlarcom but can not find any record of this couple. 1. [NJBERGEN] Newkirk's of Bergen - land
    2. Marilyn Butler
    3. I read with interest your answer regarding "Folly/Smith". Some of the names mentioned in the sales of land were familiar to me from my research. I have been researching my Newkirk ancerstors from Bergen and have been wanting to know more about land purchase and ownership. If I give you my family's ancestoral line, would you be able to help me?? Mattheus Cornelisse Van Niewkirk , born Dec. 4, 1642 in Holland - came to Bergen about 1665 from Flatbush where he arrived in 1656 with his brother Garret. He married Catryna Paulus about 1665 (his 2nd wife). They were married Aug. 15, 1686 in Bergen and both died in Bergen Paulus M. P. Newkirk, born Aug. 20, 1699 in Bergen - married Helen Spier June 18, 1728 in Schraalenburgh NJ - lived in Bergen, both died in Bergen. Jacob Newkirk, born Nov. 24, 1742 in Bergen - married Fitje Hennion 1769 in Bergen. Lived and died in Bergen Garret J. Newkirk, Born July 21, 1780 in Bergen - married Rachel Shepard 1785 - lived and died in Bergen Jacob J. Newkirk, born Nov. 26, 1807 in Bergen - married Elizabeth Brinkerhoff May 22, 1830. Lived and died in Bergen John Henry Newkirk, born Feb. 2, 1841 in Hudson Nj (Bergen?) - married Emma C. Coe March 19 1866. Since your answer to FollySmith was so complete and informative, I was hoping that you might help me as well. I have a census of 1860 in which it shows Jacob and Elizabeth with a great value of land, he was a farmer. His brother Garret was also a farmer and had the same value of land - $170,000 each. That seems like a tremendous amount of value and I wonder how much land that would be and where it was situated and how he came about getting it. By 1870 the land seems to have been sold, it seems that Jacob, and then his son, John, were living in the town of Bergen... with no land. Also! Jacob and Elizabeth show on their 1860 census that they had a young family living at their home who worked a coffee and spice shop from the house. The handwriting is difficult to read, but I think that family's name is Pandis, they had two small children. By 1870 they were no longer mentioned. Can you tell me anything about that? It seems the Newkirk's had land in the family from the beginning. I would be so anxious and so happy to get any information you might have!!! Thank you!!!!

    1. [NJBERGEN] Folly Smith
    2. >From land and probate records of William Folly you will find Hannah Folly married to John Smith. William Folly's neighbor was Albert Smith. Could Joha A. Smith first wife Abigail VanBlarcon have died and then he married Hannah Folly? 1778 William Folly owns 100 acres of land in Franklin. Neighbors were: Samuel Day, Isaac Sisco, Joost Degrote, William Dam, James Jachlin, Albert Cornall, Conrad Stagg, Henry Oldis, John Fell, Esq., Wiert Banta, Jacob Valentine, Henry Laubach. 1779 William Folly owns 100 acres of land in Franklin. Next to him is a Peter Folly with 120 acres of improved land and 100 acres of unimproved land. 1. [NJBERGEN] Phillips Knapp Family Reunion
    2. Barbara de Mare
    3. Third Annual Phillips Knapp Reunion The Phillips-Knapp Family Association is planning its third annual reunion for the weekend of September 15 and 16, 2007. It is open to anyone who has an ancestor from Rockland County surnamed Phillips or Knapp. If in doubt, join our group! Annual dues are only $5 payable in cash at the reunion, or by check to Vicki Miller. Our reunion will kick off with a welcoming breakfast at the home of Vicki Miller in Thiells. From there we will proceed to a three hour cruise on the Hudson River, complete with catered lunch and guide to tell us something about the lives of our ancestors in and along the river. After the cruise we will return to Thiells to relax while eating pie in a pie baking contest and watching a History Channel presentation on the Haverstraw brickmaking industry. Hopefully we will also have a speaker from the brick museum. We intend to end the day at the Phillips-Knapp Cemetery on Beech Road. Sunday morning we will tour the graves of our ancestors buried in Mt. Rest Cemetery and unveil the DAR plaque on the grave of Agnes Phillips before attending services at the church next to the cemetery. This church was founded by our ancestors, and was previously known as the Crick Church or St. Georges. Now it is simply called the First United Methodist Church of Stony Point. After worship we will proceed to the Town of Haverstraw Park for a picnic, and then say farewell at Parrot Bay. For further information please contact Vicki Miller at avmofm@aol.com or Barbara de Mare at BarbaradeMare@yahoo.com We are expecting participants from all over the country, so please come and meet your cousins on this fun-filled weekend. The cost of the reunion is only $15 for the catered lunch plus the $5 dues. There is no better bargain to be had! Barbara L. de Mare, Esq. Eastern Daylight Time, RckSwapr42@cox.net writes: Thanks for the info, I will try this....I don't know for sure but would presume that he was buried in a Catholic Church. I have contacted a couple but am not for sure if it is in Passaic or Bergen county...I know that HE / THEY lived in Clifton, Passaic, Wallington, Garfield....I came back East in 05 and went to Trenton to find a birth Certificate for My DAD but they didn't have one...? Again thanks for the info....For now and till then. JOHN Do you know what town your grandparents were living when they had your father? If so, you might want to contact the town for a birth certificate. Unfortunately, there are so many Catholic churches in those towns, you might have quite a search. If you can find the obit, it may list the church if there was a funeral mass. I'm probably wrong but is Cerullo an Italian name? If so, do you know if they were 1st or 2nd generation? That may help to limit the churches as well. For instance, Our Lady of Mount Virgin is in an Italian neighborhood. Go to Google and type in Catholic Churches Garfield NJ and you'll get quite a few listings. Good luck.
