I was working on census records 1860 of 3 Folley sisters (Hannah (Folley) Smith b 1784 wife of John Smith, Sarah (Folley) Smith 1798-1880 wife of Peter Smith and Mary (Folley) VanZile 1782 -1867). Which Mowerson was her first husband? When did he die? and when did she marry Isaac Finch ? and when did Hannah (VanZile) Finch dgt of Mary (Folley) VanZile die? Mary (Folley) VanZile b 1784 d 1867 was living with daughter's family Hannah (VanZile) Finch in 1860 home of Isaac Finch and ??second wife Catherine Valentine Moweraon Finch. but then a Hannah (VanZile) Finch with almost the same family is listed alive in 1860 census on p 65 ???? 1860 US, NJ, Bergen, Hohokus p 66 491-564 Isaac Finch 40, NY, laborer Hannah 39 Peter 11 Thomas 7 Susan 6 Isaac 1 Jane Mowerson 11 Ellen 9 David 5 Jacob 2 Alfred Garrison 2 492-565 John J. A German Miner Killed by a Party of Hungarians. Article Text: Morristown, N. J., April 9.--A horrible murder occurred Monday night in the mining village of Hibernia, nine miles from here, where Hungarians are principally employed. A quarrel broke out between three of a party of miners in a saloon about the payment for some drinks. Paul MATIAZOOKI, aged 38, a German by birth, who started the quarrel, is very unpopular, and the other two men set upon him and one of them smashed his skull with a beer bottle. His assailants were Gerbulo BARICKI and John STANIK. After MATIAZOOSKI received the blow from the bottle he was thrown down and brutally kicked. The bartender then helped him out of the saloon, and he staggered to his room in a boarding house near by. Thence he was forcibly taken by his assailants and, all bruised and bleeding and half unconscious, was hanged to a tree. The whole affair lasted only a few minutes. Passers-by found him and cut him down soon after the gang had gone, but life was nearly extinct. He died soon afterward. There is a hot feeling in the neighborhood against the prisoners. The police arrested three of his assailants soon afterward. Two are still sought by the police. The dead man's body was found to be frightfully mutilated. His head and body were a mass of contusions and bruises. His chest was black and blue from the kicking which he had received. The prisoners were taken to the county jail and locked up there, still under the influence of liquor. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NJ-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! The Genealogical Society of Rockland County starts off its 2007-2008 season with a program about our Palatine ancestors. This discussion is particularly timely, as plans are underway for a huge 2010 Hudson Valley celebration of the tricentennial of the arrival of the Palatines in our Valley. We are particularly honored to have Nan Dixon for our speaker for this program. Topic: Our Palatine Ancestors Speaker: Nancy Wagoner Dixon. Nan Dixon, a noted Palatine historian, is the author of the popular book, Palatine Roots: The 1710 German Settlement in New York as Experienced by Johann Peter Wagner. This book gives a wonderful background of why the Palatines came to New York, and of their adventures in the Hudson Valley. Mrs. Dixon is Vice President of the New York Chapter of Palatines to America and comes to us from upstate New York, near Lake Ontario. When: September 25, 2007, 7 PM Where: New City Library Palatine background: The Palatines came from all over Europe, but primarily from the lower Rhine area known as the Palatinate. They went up the Rhine to Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and then eventually to England. The English Queen Anne had promised free passage and riches in America to all who would emigrate. Her Golden Book showing the lush land was the final incentive of many to make the voyage. Far more people made the pilgrimage to England for passage to America than had been anticipated. People waited in tent cities all over England. Those who eventually arrived on our shores found the themselves in virtual serfdom to the patroons, particularly Robert Livingston. They were fed by Governor Hunter with meager allowances from Livingston for their work. Eventually the hardiest (or the trouble-makers depending on your point of view) migrated further north to the Schoharie Valley. Some later continued on to be the first settlers of the Mohawk Valley. General Herkimer, the hero of the Battle of Oriskany in the Revolution, was a Palatine. Barbara L. de Mare, Esq. Hi all. I have the following cd, which I am willing to do some lookups from. Revolutionary War Pensions Lists, Military Records. Contains images from 12 volumes of Revolutionary War pension records. Contains information on approximately 110,000 individuals. Some types of information that “may” be included is… Name and Rank, Regiment and description of service, Place of residence, Nature of wounds or disability, Date of death, Occasional reference to family members. Please send any requests for a lookup from this cd to me at HYPERLINK "mailto:scott1@digginbones.com"scott1@digginbones.com . Please be sure to put "Rev. War Pension Lists" in the subject line of your message. Even if you are not certain that your ancestor served during the Rev. War, you may still feel free to ask for a lookup, as long as you know the person would have been of age to have served in the war. Scott Wolfe 1421 Hampton Ct. Awhile back, someone on the list had written about Captain John Willis b. 1739/1740 who married Rachel Doremus b. 28 February 1744/45. There was a story I believe related to his father that he was killed by Indians. I cannot find my notes regarding this story, and was hoping that someone would have information regarding the legend/story. If anyone can provide information on John Willis or his family, I would appreciate it.
