Author: birches Surnames: Hollenbeck-Mach Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.orphans.us.nj/331/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Our great grandfather(Charles Hollenbeck) was either adopted or taken in by a neighbor in Bergen Co. NJ in 1870 time frame. We do have the surname of his birth parents(Mach), but cannot find them in any state records(census) Too early for NJ adoption records.. We can't find any birth or baptism records for him under his birth surname..later census, marriage and military records all listed under his adopted surname. Family stories say he had 2 natural sisters who were sent to Johnstown, PA and died in the flood of 1871..No name or ages of the girls! Do you think NJ Orphan records might help? Would these be in the Hackensack Courthouse and would they have something dating that early(1870-1880)? Thank you! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There is a story in my family that my grandfather's brother, Giuseppe Mellino, died in a fire while they were staying in an orphanage in NJ. From the 1930's census, it seems it was possibly the Sacred Heart Institute in Kearny. The information I have for Giuseppe is that he shows up on the 1925 New York Census (as John Melllino) and shows up on his father, Vincenzo's citizenship record in 1927 (Birthdate 1922) but he "disappears" from his mother, Mary's, citizenship record in 1933. Found on several census living with and without his "adopted family". He officially changed his name in 1964, when forced to produce documents about his birth from the Transit Authority. Have both "birth records" from Trenton Vital Statistics, but is a "ghost" during his years in an unknown Orphanage...Both names of biological parents are listed on original record.
