>From the "I'm Not Martha " newsletter - Thought I'd share this as I remember when the Tootsie Roll factory at the Hoboken -Weehawken line kept a barrel of rejects available for kids to take a handful- back in the late 30's-early 40's, but not after the war started - remember sugar was rationed! Yesterday, February, 23, was the 108th anniversary of the Tootsie Roll!...and I have to admit that when those little babies are in a dish I have a very hard time passing by. There they sit, all in their little wrappers...calling to me. They were always in my Christmas stocking...down in the toe, next to the orange. And Halloween. And a staple in birth- day pinatas. And durable Tootsie Rolls have been in U.S soldiers rations since WWII. Creating income for dentists around the world! And while we are at it, most people who have a dog that weighs under 30 pounds measures the dog size by relating poop to Tootsie size. Gross, I know...but true. I know I did. My Yorkie was a midgie. A friend's Spaniel is a regular size you know, the ones that have tear off pieces. So let's rock on the Tootsie Rolls. Those sweets have looked and tasted amazingly similar since the beginning...and it costs the same...one penny! ------------------------------------------------------------ The EVERLight - The No Fuel, No Flame Lighter That Lasts ForEVER The EVERLight is now available to the general public. He hand-rolled a chocolatey, chewy confection using a recipe he had brought from his homeland. * Hirschfield named his creation after his 5 year old daughter, Clara, whose nickname was Tootsie. * The Tootsie Roll became America's first individually wrapped penny candy. * The candy is included rations and became highly valued by the armed forces for its ability to withstand severe weather conditions and give troops "quick energy." It's with the troops in the Middle East. a bit of home in a chewy bite. * In the early years of television, the company sponsors popular children's shows including Howdy Doody, Rin Tin Tin and Rocky & Bullwinkle. * 1931 the Tootsie Pop, consisting of hard candy on the outside and chocolatey, chewy Tootsie Roll on the inside, is invented. * How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop? It depends on a variety of factors such as the size of your mouth, the amount of saliva, etc. Basically, the world may never know. Estimates from children seem to run from a low of 100 licks to a high of 5,800 licks, with most of them ranging from 600-800 licks. Students at Whittier Elementary in Waukesha, WI determined that it takes an average of 9 minutes to reach the center of a Tootsie Pop. A group of engineering students from Purdue University recorded that their licking machine, modeled after a human tongue, took an average of 364 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. They tried the same licking test on 20 volunteers and found that the average licks to the center were 252 licks. A chemical engineering doctorate student from the University of Michigan recorded that his licking machine required an average of 411 licks per Tootsie Pop. A group of students at Swathmore School used human lickers in a scientific experiment and determined it took an average of 144 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. * Since 1970, the Tootsie Roll Company has received more than 20,000 letters from children around the world who believe they have solved the mystery behind how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. Not only do the good people at Tootsie Roll respond to every letter children send in, they also sends out a certificate, "The Clean Stick Award," to each person who mails in a response to the question of how many licks it takes. * One Hungarian ghostbuster claims that you can catch a ghost in a jar with a Tootsie Roll. He insists that ghosts cannot resist Tootsie Rolls. A lit candle must be placed in the jar with an unwrapped Tootsie Roll. The ghost will enter the jar and then you just put the lid on. The ghost will remain in the jar until the jar is opened or broken. * The company produces more than sixty million Tootsie Rolls per day. Also, as the world's largest lollipop supplier, the company daily produces twenty million pops. ------------------------------------------------------------ <*>L<*> Heard Any Good Gossip Lately? <*>L<*> With Trashy Tabloids YOU WILL..
