I'd never heard of them before, although I did know that nonnative plants can pop up along beaches when their seeds get carried downstream on the tides from some other location. Birds sometimes show up in odd places for the same reason (only on air instead of water); that's how they believe the cattle egret got here from Africa in the last century.
