Thanks for the warm welcome, Ann. Thanks also to Jerilyn and Dot, who were so kind in welcoming me. I left South Jersey when Resorts Casino opened. I couldn't imagine working in a casino and I figured I wouldn't able to make enough money anywhere else to keep up with the cost of living that was due to come because of the casinos. I had been to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg for a vacation and remembered it as being a nice place. I was right. Not only a nice place to visit, but a nice place to live. It wasn't until I spent last summer with my family that I truly began to miss the Jersey shore. I visited Atlantic City beach a couple of times, which with all the upgrades they made to the beach, was quite nice. However, the city itself was very depressing. I saw so much sadness. I don't consider myself a pessimist, but I just couldn't shake the feeling I got. Ocean City was exactly as I had remembered it, and I spent many nights on the boardwalk with my husband and my youngest daughter, who is nine years old. It was a pleasure to show her all the things that had remained the same over the years. It was an even greater pleasure enjoying Mack and Manco's pizza. YUM! I brought eight pounds of Shriver's salt water taffy home to give to friends and neighbors. I always buy Shriver's because I used to babysit for Frank and Maureen Glaser, who used to own it. I read somewhere during my visit that Frank no longer owned Shrivers. I ate a couple of tubs of Johnson's caramel corn on top of the many cheese steak subs. There's nothing like a sub from the shore. We don't have subs here in Williamsburg, although they try to pass off imitations as Philly cheese steaks. They don't even come close. And the Italian "subs" here have mayo on them! Hello? Where's the oil? Where's the oregano? To top it off they will sometimes ask you if you want your "sub" heated. Ewww! I visited the Point Diner a couple times. I was sad to see the changes. I worked there in 1974-1977. I worked in the bakery, which had the best danish in the area. I've yet to find pastries and danish like the kind the Point Diner put out. The cinnamon buns were huge! Everytime I ride around the Somers Point circle, I find myself missing Tony Marts. I spent many a night there. The drinking age was 18 and I started sneaking in when I was 16. Shh! Don't tell anyone. I missed the live bands of the area bars when I first got to Williamsburg. We had lounges here, which were always attached to a hotel. No live bands to be found, though. Boy, it didn't take much to get me started. I'd better go now and save some of my good memories for another post. Kindest Regards, Linda
