Most of the time I'm pretty "up," but if someone met me for the first time on a day when I got up on the wrong side of bed and was crabby, I'm afraid they'd get an awful first impression on me. I keep thinking of a story I heard once (or maybe more than once) about a girl who was applying for a job that she wanted badly and had an interview scheduled. She worked and worked to get herself looking exactly right, went over her qualifications and the points she wanted to make about herself until she was almost dizzy from the repetition, and then headed off for the interview. She stepped onto the elevator with all sorts of butterflies in her stomach, and then someone on the crowded elevator backed into her and tromped right on her toes -- all 250 pounds of him. She totally lost her cool and yelled, "You stupid, clumsy oaf . . . can't you look where you're putting your feet?" It wasn't until she was ushered into the office of her prospective boss that she found out that he was the "clumsy oaf." End of interview. It was unfortunate, but her first impression was ruined because she was nervous and upset. Perhaps that's what happened with MacRae and Thomas, so maybe we should give each of them the benefit of the doubt . . .
