Yes, Marie, I'm gargling with salt water; it really does help! And the awful medication that you remember was ETH (elixir of terpin hydrate), which was usually given in a formulation with codeine as an expectorant and cough suppressant. You never hear of it any more; there are perfectly good over-the-counter medications that do the same thing without putting people to sleep or making them sick to their stomachs.
