    1. [NJ-Memories] Re: Plainfield
    2. Hi, We used to travel back and forth thru Plainfield to visit my grandparents. They lived in Colonia, right outside of Rahway. Used to go down Rt 22 and thru Plainfield. In later years, we started going down rt 287(?) and getting off around Edison. Going thru Edison had to be mid-late 60's. That was after I had left NJ. Pat

    2. Annandale, Please let me know about the rededication. I had two brothers in WW2 and one of them was KIA. I remember signs similar to that. About time and appropriate with the WW2 Memorial. Sorry that I don't pitch in as much, trying to get caught up..busy with family and illnesses and hope now I can get back into the swing of things. Regards, Grace

We put them there partly for the sentimental value of having something growing in our yard that reminded us of our beautiful Northeast, and partly because the water from our next-door neighbor's sprinkler system was running over into our yard there and making the soil wet and spongy most of the time during the warm months. Wouldn't you believe it? . . . that neighbor moved on, and the new people hardly ever water anything; and now we have drought-inspired watering restrictions that limit us to one watering of the lawn per month. I'm not sure whether those pussy willows, which need a lot of moisture, will survive that treatment. But at least we've gotten to enjoy them for a couple of years. And because of it, the director of county roads found tucked away in the road department storage garage the original Blue Star Highway sign from 1946 when the Blue Star Highway was created to honor the men and women who served during WW II. When the road director found it, he asked the history group what it was - he never heard of the Blue Star Highway and besides wasn't even born in 1946! Well, the short of it is this. We got the road director interested and he is in touch with the state highway department and we intend to re-post and re-dedicate the sign in a small rest stop on Route 22 (the original Blue Star Highway) in Whitehouse. We HOPE all the paperwork is in place so we can do this Veteran's Day this November. I'll let this list know for sure so if anyone can get to Central Jersey that day they can participate. They grow under trees and in the woods because it's shady and damp there. They have a brown, papery cover; and when you stamp on them, a greenish-gray, smoky cloud of spores comes out. We don't have them here in Colorado; it's too dry for them. The other thing you might have been thinking of is the "buttonballs" that grow on American sycamore. Those trees are fairly common in NJ, especially for residential plantings. The leaves look almost like maple leaves, and the smooth bark peels in patches and makes the tree look as if it's had a bad sunburn, except that it's greenish underneath instead of red. Those buttonballs fall off in the autumn; they're sort of fuzzy on the outside, and they crumble when you stomp on them. Nothing really smoky like the puffballs, but they do send some small stuff into the air. Another tree that has "buttonballs" is the sweetgum. I remember seeing those growing in the woods in South Mountain Reservation. You don't want to stomp on those, though . . . they're woody and prickly on the outside when they're ripe. Those trees have a maple-y leaf, too, but more star-shaped than either the maple or the sycamore.

We have the "stuff" to do the networking with -- the new computer is already network ready -- and just need to find the time to put in the card and install the software on the old "box." I need to get some of my photos out of the old one and onto the new one, so that the old one has more drive space. This new one has an 80-GB hard drive -- loads of space for my photo hobby, as long as I save them in JPEG format.

That's one of my favorite places on the East Coast. When I was in high school, my Mariner Girl Scout troop spent a weekend on the Joseph Conrad, standing watches and climbing the rigging and doing all sorts of sailor stuff. I can still tell a ship from a brig from a schooner with the info I learned then. We slept on the Australia, which has now been broken up and is in a shed for showing how a boat is put together. Bill and I were there eleven years ago, and I could show him the bunk I slept in. 3. Hello Everyone, Sorry it has been a while since my last email. Everyone is doing well. I am preparing for a "new addition" to the family. No, it's not a child, even if the preparation for it's coming seems like it. Give up---it's a brand new pentium 4 computer. I'm coming up in the world. I have not gone any where I still read some of the messages when I can. Thought I would pass on this poem. Love, Robin Stinson IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR Wild geese are flying overhead; The air is crisp and clear. The last bright leaves are tumbling down, For it's that time of year. The pungent smell of woodsmoke drifts From bonfires everywhere, And squirrels darting to and fro Hide nuts in ample share. Wagons filled with happy children Are seen on country lanes; Older folks, in sweet nostalgia, Live childhood days again. The flower beds now look forlorn; Jack Frost has passed our way. With icy breath he seared the blooms That once were bright and gay. A cozy fire is on the hearth; Dear friends have come to call. Come let us share a cup of tea And say good-bye to fall.
