    2. OK,Gang you have hooked me into asking a Halloween question. Did anyone else on the list call trick-or-treating "Cold piecing?" I think originally it may have been "Coal piecing",and if you were bad you got coal instead of candy.[Like a Christmas stocking.] I think it may have been a Philly saying.Since we are just across the Delaware from Philly,we have a lot of traditions and sayings that originated there. Many of my friends parents were reared in town, and moved to Jersey when they were young newlyweds.Smart people, give me jersey over Philly anyday of the week! 2. Dear list members, We still dye eggs in our family. The grandchildren are now included in the tradition, and Tom is happy that the kids are around to play with me. When all our kids were grown and gone,I still drug out the egg dying cups[yes,we have "ceremonial cups just for that occasion..he he!] and made Tom dye with me.What can I say?I am a creature of habit. As I said before,I don't like to actually eat the eggs, just dye and play "Uppers".On Easter Saturday everyone in this house knows what is expected of them when I start pulling out the dye, vinegar ,and egg dying mugs. They all groan, and roll their sleeves up while I cover the table with newspapers. How I ever got all of us talking on the Easter traditions in October,I will never know.Sorry........ Now do you all want to hear of the Henderson's "going to the pumpkin patch" traditions?... It was great fun. My brothers went out on "mischief night" with stockings full of ashes. We also had fenced in yards and the gates were all missing the next day. Ann

My friends and I weren't allowed out on Mischief Night so there was no way we could take care of them the next year! MY grandchildren live in Wisconsin and it seems that the whole state, for safety reasons, has adopted a set time and date for trick or treating. My kids go out from 2-4 PM on the Sunday preceding Halloween. Each municipality chooses it's own time and date. Since they've never known it any other way they enjoy it. Here in the Chicago area, the traditional trick or treating occurs on Halloween. Last year I went through 6 bags of candy before 5 PM. The big kids were out of luck! My mother, born in NYC moved to Jersey City when she was 7 (a move from the BIG city to the suburbs!) and they went trick or treating on Thanksgiving. Anyone else remember that? But sometimes we had to sing a song, or do a dance before we got anything. We took care of those people the next year on mischief night. Now most town's have set the day, and the time for the kid's to go around. I think that stink's. They only give them two hours. We stayed out all night until they shut off the lights off on us. We only get about six kid's where we live. Were 1/8 of a mile off the main road. I guess their to lazy, or too scared to walk through the woods to get to our house. Diesel

    1. [NJ-Memories] Ghosts
    2. Good Morning Folks, I found this on the Mercer County List today, and thought some of you might have the answer for Lee? This is not our Lee. I don't remember seeing them myself. Diesel Does anyone recall from the 1960s, a family of ghosts that glow in the dark and had a cardboard haunted house with platforms at the windows for the ghosts to stand on? It became popular among the children. They were made of soft plastic and the figure picked up the light of the day and then would glow in the dark. Their was the mother, father and children. If anyone can recall the toy company that made them I would appreciate the information. Thank you very much Lee Chicka2962@aol.com

    1. [NJ-Memories] Re: Hackettstown
    2. Robin, Thank you, I have always thought of Hackettstown as a beautiful little town. It has grown and changed quite a bit over the years. It was a great town to grow up in. It was alot smaller and all of the stores were on or adjacent to Main St. Now there are a lot of Antique/Craft type stores there. Malls were just coming into being in the country back then and were very small compared to those we now have. Everyone knew everyone and if they didn't know you, believe me, they knew your parents or relatives. My mother used to know what we were doing before we ever got home. I used to call the telephone my mother's grapevine. LOL Our school was a district school for several small towns and townships. Some of them had their own grammar schools. So when we reached high school age we met the kids our age from the neighboring small towns. If you came in from Washington, then I believe you are talking about Donaldson's Produce Stand. It is still there. Donaldsons' own a farm off of Rockport Rd. My brother went to school with his brother and used to spend alot of time down on that farm. Pat Pat

    2. Marie, I haven't set my hair with pincurls in years. Remember the hard curlers, then the ones with the bristle brushes. And some girls used the juice cans. How on earth did we sleep on them? I still have my white plastic teasing comb from the fifties with two little poodles on the top. Pat
