Thanx to everyone for my birthday greetings! I'll get back to you individually as I get my mail caught up; we've been camping and riding bicycles since Friday, and we just now got home. We just had to get in a last trip before it gets too cold to either camp or ride bikes. The low-elevation birds had curved feathers on top of their heads, looking like question marks; the mountain birds had straight ones that looked like exclamation points. Sometimes we'd see a whole covey of California quail in our neighborhood, just north of Los Angeles: Dad, Mom and anywhere from seven or eight to about a dozen chicks. They were such fun to watch! Last month, while we were in Idaho visiting our daughter and son-in-law, we saw a small covey of quail on the greenbelt along the Boise River. First time we'd seen birds like that since we left California, over five years ago. Not sure whether they were California or Gambel's quail, since couldn't get close enough to see the breast markings. That's the only way to tell them apart. Ann, Glad I read the race was going to start again. We had the football game on and would not have wanted to miss the race. We've been a fan since the 40's also. Frank used to race at Flemington, Hightstown, Nazareth in the 50' and 60's. Well back to the races just taking a small break. Hi everyone, About the virus problem. The virus is called ----DON'T LAUGH-----Bugabear. They suggest to update your computer system with Norton or what ever at least once a week. This virus is really bad. A lady at Church Meeting told me about it the same day my new computer came. Isn't God's timing perfect. So when I installed the Norton Anti virus it automatically caught it. The new Windows are really prone to get every virus that comes down the pike. Also, I was watching Tech TV (it is on our digital cable system) and they talked about it the night before and they said to go to their website and click your way to Microsoft and they have free down loads that patch up holes have in them that could let viruses in or hackers as well. I guess there is something to say about have an old computer that used Windows 98. The newer viruses seem to leave them alone. If you have any questions let me know and I will try to help. I am not an expert but I have had experience with this. Well is anyone cares. Charlotte is having their NASCAR race weekend. It hate it. I live near the track. The traffic is awful. I caught in it. When you live around the track you learn to do your grocery shopping the day before (that doesn't help most of the time because they have events all week.) or go out just as the race begins. The roads are much better. Well I got caught at "The Jack in the Box" restaurant with a friend along with my oldest boy. After we finished we went behind the restaurant and shopped at BJ's Warehouse (like SAM'S). When I got out the traffic was awful. Just as I got up to the light to make a left to get onto I-85 (the road) he but a barrel out and I could only make a right hand turn. I was mad. The policeman had all the traffic coming out of BJ's heading TOWARD the race track. I was MAD. So I went up the road a bit and it narrowed to 1 lane. So I U turned back to the other side and believe it or not it was quicker. Well the rain has stopped and they said they think it will begin around 3 pm or so. Sorry to bore you but I thought you all might get a kick out of it. Take Care, Love, Robin Stinson

Yes Dot , a lot this week, but my server has a Postini system so I can go to the servers mailbox and read or delete without it coming to my mailbox. I like it a lot and its free to subscribers. Two traveling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansion's guest room. Instead the angels were given a small space in the cold basement. As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied, "Things aren't always what they seem." The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable farmer and his wife. After sharing what little food they had the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night's rest. When the sun came up the next morning the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the field. The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel how could you have let this happen? The first man had everything, yet you helped him, she accused. The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you let the cow die. "Things aren't always what they seem," the older angel replied. "When we stayed in the basement of the mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn't find it." "Then last night as we slept in the farmers bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I gave him the cow instead. Things aren't always what they seem." Yum Robin, that recipe will go into my cooking achieves. It should be as good as the Salem Oak Diner's meal I had at noon today. The pot pie gravy was very yellow.I think it must have had some saffron in it too. When I was a child,my grandparent's would take us to Sunday dinner at that diner .Afterwards we would browse through all the graveyards looking for ancestor's stones.Guess that is how I got my penchant for genealogy. To everyone else on the list,a friend and I went to Salem today [in the pouring rain I might add] to dig into our Salem County genealogy at the Courthouse.I found the marriage record of my 5th great grandparent's David Willis, and Mary Harwood from 1804.Most likely Bruce Willis is a shirt-tail cousin! Robin, what other great "Down Jersey "recipes are there in your Salem County Cookbook? Any for crabcakes, corn fritters,or other seafood dishes? Do tell! I have over 300 cookbooks in my kitchen library, but not the Salem County 1963 one. Jerilyn ,who is still drooling over the wonderful taste the potpie from the Salem Oak Diner.
Hello Everyone, I was going through my "New" IDEALs Magazines that a little birdie sent me a while back. I came across the cuttiest picture of a mother Bob-white (Quail) and her babies in the snow. When I lived in New Jersey (Salem, Co.) every year like clockwork our resident mother Quail and her babies would run across our backyard. They did this a few times in the summer (Not the winter). I couldn't resist this poem/story. Hope everyone enjoys it. A QUAIL TALE When I went down the road To collect the early mail, I saw in front of the bushes A family of strolling quail. Father came first, The Protector, Trailing three little ones in a row, Followed by Watchful Mother With one more baby in tow. In single file they proceed, Each nodding and bobbing its head, And I could hear flutters of sweet talk Though I couldn't discern what they said. I quietly spoke, "Good Morning!" And my voice had a friendly edge, But they took my words as warning And disappeared under the hedge. Five long, silent minutes they waited, Hiding themselves from sight. I stood motionless by my mailbox, Hoping they wouldn't take flight. At last, with soft, sudden stirring, Father's top knot peeped out; And the trio again filled the footsteps Of their captain, their leader. their scout. >From her camouflage Mother sped forward Into the golden sunshine. But, oh, did she know, I wondered, That baby wasn't in line? They made not one backward glance As they quickly marched away, Thinking only of empty tummies And the simple routines of the day. Should I search for the smallest fellow And set him out in plain slight? Would he call to his mother and father, Or would he be speechless with fright? In an instant, in frantic flurry, The tiny quail made timid sounds; That same moment the Nervous Mother Stopped and turned around. This time she walked him before her, Making sure he heard her reproach, And soon they caught up with the father, Their captain, their leader, their coach! IDEALS Magazine MCMXCV By: Carol Hogan
