The birds nest along the cliffs, in cracks and crannies. We've seen them occasionally while hiking in that area. Out our way, the Air Force Academy sponsors a falcon-breeding program that's getting the birds established along the Rampart Range, the mountains that the Academy backs up against. And at home games during the half-time festivities, the cadets put on a falcon show, with those beautiful birds swooping high into the air over the stadium and then dropping back down. It's a real treat to watch them. We also have kestrels around here, and Northern harriers and red-tailed hawks as well. Back in California I'd occasionally see red-shouldered hawks, but not very often. My own favorite hawk story happened while Bill and I were engaged, going on 38 years ago. Bill had taken me up to visit his mother in Chatham, NY, over Easter weekend, and on Sunday afternoon we drove over to Pittsfield State Forest in Massachusetts, a favorite spot of his. We took a really nice hike along a hiking trail that had been used for cross-country skiing only a few weeks before and which still had a few snow-and-ice patches on it. We didn't have any problems on the way out, but on the way back we accidentally disturbed a pair of goshawks that were setting up housekeeping only about a hundred feet or so from the trail. Those two birds dive-bombed us for about two or three hundred yards, and only quick running behind trees at the last possible instant kept us from getting our scalps ripped. About a year later we were hiking in the same area and got almost the same reception again, probably from the same pair of birds. 1. [NJ-Memories] Niagara Falls Trip
    2. Hi Gang, Did you all miss me? Tom and I were in Niagara Falls this weekend with friends. On the way home yesterday we stopped at Letchford State Park and Houghton College. Our friends are grads from there. In the park we saw two lovely waterfalls that were smaller than Niagara,of course, but just as awesome. There was a huge craft Show and fair in the park with over 1200 dealers.Aparently this is a yearly event. We did some Christmas shopping, and got several unique things. I am still catching up on my E-mails from the long weekend of being away,so if I owe any list members a letter,I will catch up in the next few days.We had an absolutely wonderful time.Friday night we were at Locust Lakes in Pa. Poconos at our friends' cabin, then we left for Niagara on Sat. AM. We arrived around noon, and even the rain didn't deter us from having fun.The falls were more spectacular than I remember from when I was there as a child.Sunday we did the Maid of the Mist ride, then went on to the floral clock, the gorge, and on up the river to Niagara-on-the-Lake.We drove on to Lake Ontario antiquing and enjoying the fall colors on the way.Since we were with the couple with whom we did the English Canal trip with last year ,it was fitting that we saw a lock open on the Welland Canal .We were glad we did not have to work the lock! .Nent we dined at a wonderful little restaurant overlooking Lake Ontario. It was the Canadian Thanksgiving,so we had turkey. We also took a ride [for a nickel!]on a restored turn -of-the-century merry-go-round and in general had a ball. Doris,I am afraid we did not see your friend.:-0,although i was constantly looking for her. The B+B we stayed at in Niagara was only 2 blocks from the falls, and we could even hear them from our balcony. The inn was owned by a couple who has come to Canada 10 years ago from Croatia. They were quite an interesting family. We can only imagine how blessed we are to live in our land, folks. All in all ,it was a fairytale weekend. If you ever want to know a good place to stay in Niagara on the Canadian side I will tell you where it is.The price is more than reasonable. The leaves were wonderful ,especially in N.Y. state. The weekend was chock full of God's awesome creation, and we were wowed! Jerilyn , One who still is glad she resides in the glorious Garden State

There is one big Hawk however, who is to slow to catch small bird's, so he feed's off slower moving creature's in the field's. Plenty of Turkey's this year, they come right up to our front porch looking for food. There are also plenty of big buck's this year, but I'm to lazy to clean them, so I don't hunt any more. There was frost on the pumpkin's this morning. I cut some tree's down yesterday, and got to do some fire wood cutting today, after when it warms up some that is. It look's like winter is on the way. I spent Saturday at the Hershey Auto Show in Harrisburg. I go every year, I love looking at all the old cars there. Brings back plenty of old memories. Wish I would have kept all my old car's, specially my 1956 Mustang. Diesel

I've made a practice of not opening any downloads that I wasn't expecting, no matter who sends them to me. That's kept me virus-free for the six years that we've been online. A good friend of mine out in California sent me the Goodtimes virus about four or five years ago. She didn't know that she had it when she sent it out, and I didn't know that it was being shipped to me. But since I didn't download the attachment, I never got the virus. She had to get rid of the virus, and so did the mutual friend of ours who had in all innocence sent it to her. A chihahua (sp?) > sweater would probably work. > Dot No directions to knit or crochet a sweater but the small sweaters are available from the mail order companies, I just pulled out my J-B Wholesale Pet Supplies catalog and found an xx-small sweater for $5.95. J-B is a NJ company so that keeps it on topic. :-) They are in Oakland, where the Boy Scout camps, Camp Glen Grey and Camp Tamarack were located. I have known the owners for years, In fact, my customer # is in the low 100's. It would have been lower but I used to go right to the company and get my things. Their web site is jbpet.com and their toll free # is 800-526-0388. Within NJ the # is 201-405-1111 The sweater I'm looking at in the xx-small only comes in 2 colors, red and cobalt. Larger sizes have other colors available too. The xx-small measurement is 6" from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. If you think this is too large call them as they they have sizes to fit all dogs and puppies. Hope this helps! Judy ------ Judy Lamken, Kilkee Kerries Chicagoland mailto:kerries@kilkee.net

    3. Lee, Sounds great. I'd love to have held a Peregrine Falcon. We went to Hawk Mtn in PA a few years ago and learned that this bird dive bombs from above at incredible spead and curls his feet into like fists and hits his prey on the back of the neck, breaking it and killing the bird on the wing. He is so fast that he can fly down below the bird he killed and catch it as it falls. I was amazed. Speaking of hawks. We have a redshouldered hawk in the neighborhood. He thinks my bird and squirrel feeders are his breakfast and supper table. I am missing several of my squirrels. He has already gotten one of our chipmunks. Saw him flying away with him. I wish he'd leave. I feel guilty feeding the birds thinking he might eat one.
