I loved them -- and would you believe, my daughter still has them. I read them all over again just before I started nursing school, back in 1988. Nursing sure has changed from the 1940s, when those books were written! For instance, back then only the sickest patients got IVs, and the docs started them. Now just about everybody gets an IV, and the nurses start almost all of them. One of the girls there said that she had every kind of measles in the book, plus all the other childhood diseases as well. I've had only two, and only one of those as a child. I caught the measles when I was in kindergarten, and it must have been around late January or early February, since I recall one of the kids in my class bringing me Valentine cards and cookies once I was out of quarantine. My mother actually sent me to school with the measles, even though she knew I was sick, because "Doris Jeanne hasn't missed any school yet, and she's not going to start now." Of course I got sent back home again, and she and my aunt had to carry me most of the way because I was too darned sick to walk. And, Kittie, since you know Nutley -- this was from Yantacaw School to the part of Highfield Lane that's east of Washington Avenue, just a block from the river, up that hill and down the other side. My other bout with a childhood disease was when I caught the chicken pox at age 23. I was lucky in that most people who catch kids' diseases as adults get really sick, but I went to work right through the whole thing because I never felt that terribly ill and I didn't know what that rash was. I even went out on a date with Bill (the great guy I married) with it; I didn't spot the rash until after he'd brought me home. Since people with chicken pox were quarantined when we were kids, and I didn't have any brothers or sisters to bring it home, either, I'd never seen that characteristic rash before. Now I can spot it a mile away. Incidentally, Bill came over the next day and took me for a walk and vacuumed my rug (which my roommate's dog had made a mess of), and it wasn't until I saw his driver's license a couple of months later that I found out that that had been his birthday. I still have a lot of resistance to viral infections; I've never in my life had the flu, and as a high-school senior, I passed the rubella to a bunch of girls without ever catching it myself. One evening I took a bunch of younger kids to Palisades Park; and after I'd driven them home, I went to a slumber party with a bunch of senior girls. The next day one of the boys from the Palisades Park trip called to tell me that he'd come down with rubella. A couple of weeks later every girl who had been at that slumber party came down with it -- in fact, at least one of them went to the prom with it! -- and I was the only possible source of the infection. Why I didn't catch it, I don't know. Doris in Colorado (Up2Nutrix@aol.com) "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose." -- Jim Elliot, missionary and martyr

    2. A group game that we used to play when we were around junior-high age was "Jive On." Anyone remember that one? There are parts of it that I don't remember, but what I do recall is sitting in a circle and doing some sort of action that would cause someone to lose out, and that loser would have to walk around the circle with one hand on a hip and the other up in the air with forefinger elevated, while the rest of the group all chanted: "Jive on, down that line, I saw you last night a-eatin' cheese; if you weren't eatin' cheese, what'cha doing on your knees?" Does anyone remember what it was that we all did in the circle? 2. Dear Kittie and all, I loved "Re Light, green light" and "Giant Steps"[otherwise known as "Mother, May I ?",and dodgeball, and "Stone School" and jump rope, although I was rotten at it.Guess that was because my legs were herds shorter than everyone else's! :-)At 4'10",I would still be rotten! Some of you on the list know that Tom and I have been sick for almost a month now.The doctor has tested Tom for,of all things, whooping cough! We have to know what this is ,and get better real soon since our daughter Jen is ready to deliver us our third grandchild.[Her first.]It will be this week, probably Friday ,if not before. Now that I have opened a new topic for us to discuss, what childhood diseases do you all remember having? They are memories, too, albeit not happy ones.I picked holidays to be sick with most of mine...not smart! :-) Childhood Memories I shall start."Ready or not here I come!" Chicken pox:Third grade,Halloween.Did not need a mask, was peppered .My classmates sent cards, and trick-or-treat candy to me from the class party. Our doctor's daughter was in my class, and Dr. Johnson delivered them to me on his house call.[Remember them?Reach waaaaay back in your memory for that one!] Measles, regular,:Fourth of July.Looked at fireworks out of my bedroom window.Reminded me of Robert Louis Stevenson's poem ,"The Land of Counterpane".You know..."When I was sick and lay in bed ,I had two pillows at my head",although my personal counterpane had fireworks! Three day measles:Thanksgiving.Did not even need to miss school.Dumb choice of timing! Mumps:All of Easter vacation [in seventh grade[,and then some .Sick, sick, sick,no fun.I did get a nifty pair of PJ's from my grandparents, and about 6 new Nancy Drew and Cherry Ames books. Whooping cough:Last three weeks of summer vacation, and then coughed until Christmas vacation.Did you know what the Japanese call whooping cough? The 100 day cough disease. Apt name!I caught the rotten disease at summer camp.Ugh! Asian Flu.I know that is not an actual "childhood disease ",but since I was a child when I had it,and on a Christmas vacation ,I might add,I shall include it.This I generously shared with my entire family, and not just my siblings as I did other germs. They were not impressed! We had foster children when I was growing up,and two of the boys who lived with us parent's were doctors in med school,so they came and took care of all of us.Nice to have private health care workers in the family! Now as an adult,I still in the back of my mind face holidays with the fear and trepidation of the thought,"Oh no,now what lovely germ can I catch this time!" Tell me your childhood disease stories! Jerilyn, who is still coughing her head off

    3. Ellen, I'm sure one of your children would be happy to go out with you. I don't know how old your grandchildren are but mine think its "cool" to have their grandparents rollerblade. Just take it easy the first couple of times. :-) My husband had back surgery 4 years ago that left him with some numbness in one foot. He looks rather funny blading because one side is not as strong as the other but he has fun anyway. Oh, don't forget to wear a helmet, knee , elbow and wrist guards! Don't forget to tell us how you enjoy it. Judy Judy ELLEN542@aol.com wrote: > Judy, > > OK you tempted me to try the rollerblades. Your escapades sound > wonderful.
