Lee and Dot, You are ahead of me in time. I had plasters on my chest before Vicks ect. Hey Dot that kerosene is correct. My grandparents made a concoction of Onion, Sugar,Kerosene, water and it was always on the coal stove and it got thick and we used in for colds. My parents didn't wonder why? It tasted really good. Apparently I didn't die.lol. Norma Lee you are forgetting the . on net and been getting your emails back. HI Lee, Yep, used it all the time. Eating it? NO Thank God that was not one of my mother's home remedies. I did eat something with sugar on top to conceal the taste but don't know what it was. Want to say kerosene but that doesn't sound right. found a snowball by Tastykake yesterday but it does not taste as good as the originals. Enjoy your birds. Hello All, When I was growing up in the 1940's I was sick a lot with upper respiratory infections. One of my family's favorite remedies was Vicks. And yes, I was made to eat it. Got to like it as I recall. I have also heard of people taking Kerosene, as odd as it may seem, for childhood croup. My late aunt told me that when she was a child in Stroudsburg she had to take Kerosene whenever she had croup. The subject came up as I told her of my three sons problem with croup and she offered me that solution. Seemed rather drastic and dangerous sounding to me....needless to say I passed on making my kids take it. YUCK! Mamie
HI ALL ! IT'S 66 DEGREES HERE TODAY. YES, I HAVE ON LONG PANTS. A GOOD DAY FOR CUTTING DOWN PALM FRONDS AT THE PARK. THE MOSQUITOS WILL BE HIDING OUT. OUR BIRD COUNTERS ARE GONE UNTIL NEXT YEAR, BUT LOTS OF BIRDS ARE STILL FLYING THROUGH OUR AREA. WE HAVE A FLAMINGO DOWN THE ROAD.JUST BEAUTIFUL. DID ANYONE EVER USE VICKS VAPO RUBFOR CONJESTION..HAS ANYONE EVER HEARD OF EATING IT ? YUCK. MENTHOL BREATH.. Hi All, I remember my dad always saying, "I'll end up in the Poorhouse one of these days." Well, it's true, at least if you lived back in the 1800s. Diesel http://www.poorhousestory.com

All that having them go all the way around shows is that nerve roots that are on opposite sides of the spinal cord got involved at the same time. Usually only one nerve gets affected at once, although multiple nerves can be involved. And as for them coming back "once a year," there is always the possibility of recurrence, but not on any kind of a set timetable. Most people who get shingles get it only once or twice in their lives. I picked up twelve credits at FDU: 3 each in English, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, and psychology. (or was it sixteen: 4 each in those subjects?) And when I went to nursing school out in California in 1988, I had to repeat every one of those except the English. I tested out on that. Thanks Doris for all your medical help. Your personal help with Katie was gratefully received. I heard in the old days when the Shingles go around your waist you died. I would have rather had them there. They went around my chest and across the whole back. Being a woman you have straps right where they were. I have heard so many places, and one right across the face. Also heard they can come back once a year, so far lucky. What happens is that the chicken-pox virus (the "varicella/zoster virus") doesn't necessarily go away after you've had the chicken pox. Instead, it hides out in cranial- or spinal-nerve cells and just waits for you to have some sort of stress in your life that triggers them to come out. They travel right down the nerve roots to the endings on the skin, and there they set up that painful eruption that we know of as "shingles." The name has nothing to do with the stuff on your roof; it comes from the Latin word "cingulum," which means "girdle." That's because the most common site is around the waist, where a girdle would be worn in the olden days. The infection can follow any of the sensory nerves, though, which is why it can even pop out on the face or in an eye. Incidentally, those blisters on the skin with shingles are chock full of chicken-pox virus; so if you should get it, stay away from anyone who hasn't had chicken pox. The difference is that in rheumatic fever something about the germ (I believe it's a toxin that it puts out, but I'd have to check my med books to be sure) attacks joints, heart valves, and sometimes the nervous system. The sufferer gets swollen, painful joints, and sometimes has so much damage done to the heart valves that they need to be replaced. Badly damaged valves can lead to heart failure and possibly death. Another complication is the nervous-system one, the twitching called chorea or "St. Vitus' Dance." None of it is any fun. Fortunately, rheumatic fever is pretty rare now, thanks to antibiotic treatment for strep infections. So is Bright's Disease, where strep attacks the kidneys and causes them to fail.
