    3. Norma and friends, The holly arboretum in Millville is a work in progress. At present the housing commission and the shade tree commission who are heading up the project are in the throes of acquiring the property in which to build the holly arboretum. Millville is really a dynamic city there is much going on in terms of cultural expansion. Focus is along the river front. So we are in the planning stages, already one grant has been received to help fund the project. Another interesting thing is that if any of y'all have been to Millville you'll notice the vast number of holly trees through out the city. These were all specific named cultivars planted by the late Clarence Wolfe, Dan Fenton and possibly one other gentle man, so I am told. With that in mind we are thinking about developing a historic walking trail through out the city ending at the holly arboretum. If any one out there on NJM wants more information, please contact me privately. As far as fruiting of holly is concerned, much depends on the weather conditions that affects pollination. It seems that weather also plays a very big part in development of the chemical compounds that affect the palatability of the fruit. The studies I mentioned in my previous post will make that clear. 1. Re: [NJ-Memories] Mason-Dixon Line
    2. Judy Lamken
    3. No Lee, the Mason Dixon Line doesn't go through New Jersey although most of us grew up thinking it did. Since the early nineteenth century, the name Mason Dixon has represented an imaginary border between North & South: before the Civil War, it was thought to divide all free states from slave states. In fact, the Mason-Dixon Line was never more than the border between Maryland & Pennsylvania. In 1632 Maryland had been granted "that part of the Bay of Delaware which lieth under the Fortieth Degree of North Latitude." Unfortunately, the fortieth parallel ran through the middle of Philadelphia; if upheld, the Maryland charter would deprive Philadelphia of her only harbor. The two colonies argued the case in English courts for decades. By 1750 the boundary had been officially located on paper, but someone still had to find it in the woods. A survey team hired by Thomas Penn in 1761 spent several months trying to locate the border, but failed after letting a survey telescope warp in the rain. Penn was disgusted to find no Americans capable of the project and sent to England for some proper surveyors. He found Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon. These two men had traveled around the world studying astronomy and had mastered celestial navigation's complex mathematics. Both Maryland and Pennsylvania agreed to abide by the surveyors' results, and in 1763 Mason and Dixon began to work. The first step was to locate the exact starting point, 15 miles due south of Philadelphia. It was found in the middle of Mr. Alexander Bryan's plantation house, and an observation post was built in his front yard. From there the survey moved west following the line of latitude 39 degrees, 43 minutes and 17.6 seconds North. A wide swath was cleared by axemen, and limestone markers brought from England were placed each mile to mark the way. Every 11 1/2 miles the scientists would line up these posts through their telescopes and make elaborate measurements of star movement to compensate for error. All distances were measured with a 66 foot surveyor's chain. In 1766 Indian resistance forced the work to halt for a year, but negotiations allowed the surveyors to continue until, 30 miles east of Pennsylvania's present southwest corner, they were ordered to stop for good - 233 miles, 3 chains and 38 links from the starting post in Mr. Bryan's yard. Today more of the old stone markers are found in doorsteps than along the boundary, but the Mason-Dixon Line still exists. It was resurveyed in 1849 and 1902 and found to be remarkably accurate; with minor adjustments, it still serves as the Maryland-Pennsylvania border, while the Mason-Dixon Line of the popular imagination fades into the past. IF the line had gone eastward it would have cut across New Jersey. Sorry to be the bearer of this news! 3. As I was growing up in the Atlantic City area, I, and my fellow classmates, were teased about being 'from the south'. According to what we were told, the line went from Trenton southeast to just above Egg Harbor - Brigantine area. I did research it many years ago, and it was close - much like the line of old East and West Jersey from colonial times. -----Original Message----- From: Robin M. 3. Hi Norma, Glad to be back with all my NJM friends you oldies and you new comers too. As I told you in a private email, Norma, Holly berries are NOT POISONOUS, at least to my knowledge and some of the research being funded by the Holly Society's Research Committee. While the Research Committee itself does not do active research about the many aspects of holly, it does fund professional researchers. One such project that is now in the review stages for publication is on toxicity of holly. I have personally reviewed the scientific abstract but ethically can not make any comments on its content until it is published. There are many legends and folklore on the use of holly for medicinal purposes and of course Yerba Mate, a tea, from South America comes from a species of Holly and the black drink of our south eastern native Americans comes from Ilex vomitoria, the Yaupon Holly. Having eaten many holly berries on several occasions while the audience gags in disgust during my many talks on holly, I can tell you this that they are so unpalatable that no one would want to eat so many that it would kill. Birds on the other have a different digestive system but are smart enough to know when the berries are more palatable. We see this in different species and cultivars, some are devoured early while others are devoured very late in the winter. It may be a way of mother nature to provide an extended period of nourishment for the birds. Enough for our plant lesson of the day. Regardless just enjoy holly for it's beauty. Remember the Holly Society of America was founded in Millville, NJ; The Holly City USA, the headquarters of HSA and at one point literally thousands of pounds of fresh cut holly was shipped from our beloved garden state. If you want to know more get on the Holly Societies' web page http://www.hollysocam.org/ Have a very Holly Jolly Christmas y'all, Carl ----- Original Message ----- From: "franor" <franor@atmc.net> To: "Carl Suk" <csuk@kih.net> Cc: <NJ-MEMORIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 17, 2002 7:59 AM Subject: Re: [NJ-Memories] Re: Norma and recipes > Hi Carl, > I am so glad you are back on Memories. 3. Hi all, I guess my message about the newspaper article about the 2 NJs got lost. Although I have always been aware of South Jersey and North Jersey, I never wanted to be linked to East North Jersey! No way does beautiful Sussex county have much in common with the east. 3. Now wait a gosh darn minute! I grew up in Northern NJ - East, Rutherfors and Montclair! When I was in high school my parents sold our summer home in Spring Lake and purchased one in Sussex County, Northern NJ - West because my father was tired of the shore commute each day. Both areas have their good points AND their bad! Overall Northern NJ was a wonderful place to grow up.
