Hi Everyone, I was wondering where everyone was. Hi Jerilyn---Miss ya. What is served a traditional St. Pat's Dinner? My grandmom never did this. I guess it is because we were not Irish. I have been working on my business. It at times takes up a lot of my time. Stewart's eating place makes Black Cows with Root Beer and Vanilla Ice Cream ---Oh I am longing for one and it is not 7 AM yet -----------Marie G
My Black Cows were always rootbeer and vanilla ice cream.Never heard of a hoboken, but perhaps it is because I was reared in South Jersey. Jerilyn from Collingswood
Am hoping that a Lister may have been a sodajerk back in their youth ...what is/was a "hoboken". am reading a mystery set in 1944 Midwest and the sodajerk mentions black cows and hobokens. Know a black cow was rootbeer and chocolate ice cream but since I was born in Hoboken, would love to know just what it is! Ruth in NJm
Marie and Betty, I know how it is but we gals will hang in and do our best to beat whatever we have. I know Betty will try to beat this one too, as she has done before. Wish I could be on more, but I too have the old age problems with my eyes and other things. A shot in the bum yesterday and I am able to type and walk and feel nothing. Too bad its not a permanent thing. To all those that have written off line and sent your prayers I am so deeply touched and I love you for it. Thank you from my heart. Hi Jerilyn and All NJM'ers, Still around and kicking. This job is taking it's toll on my computer life LOL. I get in late at night and read email then it's time for beauty sleep. Nothing much going on, the winter is really getting to me, dreary, ugly snow. We are supposed to be getting some relief from the frigid weather. Today was beautiful, sunny and warm, yeah warm in the 40's that's a heatwave. Weatherman says 60 by Tuesday and beautiful weekend. Hope all you out there are doing great and hanging in there for the change of seasons. Easter is my favorite holiday but I think it has a lot to do with the season changing. Ellen
Hi All, I have not been posting lately as I am back in chemo, and will have to take it the rest of my life as the ole body is manufacturing cancer cells all by itself. Oh well better then alzhymers. We were always had to wear green for St. Paddys Day, not my favorite color. Please does anyone know a good ulcer diet? The chemo sent me to the hospital for 6 days vomiting blood, it was ulcers, they just told me the basics about what to and not to eat. When it comes to diets I have never been on one and now at 73 I have to diet. Hate the first 3 letters, DIE... lol Betty in Good Ole NJ
Sorry guys this is my fault. Buddy should have just written me. I am the one that sent the fdw. out on who's a Yankee. He is a good ole Jersey person born in High Bridge. I knew him when he was young, well younger than me. I knew his Dad better. I love to read his inputs and if I don't agree so what. I always like to hear two sides of a story. Won't add Buddy to the list but he is a good person and a caring one. Hi all, I know where Jim has been.Get better soon, flu is no fun,and 105 temps are horrid! Haven't heard hide nor hare from Diesel,Norma,Dot,Jack,Robin,Marie,Ellen, and many others. At least on the list, have heard from some personally, though.Jersey memories must not be at the forefront of our brains right now. Tom and I are going on our Annual Couple's Retreat at Spruce Lake in Canadensis,Pa. this weekend. The weather is suppossed to be wonderful, for a change! There will be 24 of us going. This is our 35th year of going away together ,quite a wonderful tradition. My hubby has just been diagnosed with diabetes, and we are learning to eat a new way,and walking our little legs off for exercise.I guess I must be a pretty good personal trainer though,I have his sugar level down 50 points, and he has lost 5 pounds. In joining him for his walks, and eating the same menu,I am getting leaner, too.Goody, goody! He says I am a hard taskmaster. Just thought I should "drop in"and invite us all to post a memory.Does anyone have any fond St.Patty's Day Jersey traditions to share? The Wearin'of the Green Day will be here before we know it! Jerilyn
ok wassup with the guy emailing me and telling me to stop bombarding him with something about accents? geez , you'd think he'd check to see who sent the stuff to him. if he happens to be watching the list, HEY! I DON"T SEND FORWARDS TO ANYONE!!!! EVER. there. I feel better now Donna Franklin
Lizzy, Very interesting! I love and always have loved Tootsie Rolls. Have made rum balls, but never with Tootsie Rolls and just may try it. Sounds good, have you tried them? When I was young and people had baby showers, it wasn't uncommon to put a wet, partially melted, small tootsie roll in the bottom of a training potty. Kind of looked authentic and was considered a joke. Pat
>From the "I'm Not Martha " newsletter - Thought I'd share this as I remember when the Tootsie Roll factory at the Hoboken -Weehawken line kept a barrel of rejects available for kids to take a handful- back in the late 30's-early 40's, but not after the war started - remember sugar was rationed! Yesterday, February, 23, was the 108th anniversary of the Tootsie Roll!...and I have to admit that when those little babies are in a dish I have a very hard time passing by. There they sit, all in their little wrappers...calling to me. They were always in my Christmas stocking...down in the toe, next to the orange. And Halloween. And a staple in birth- day pinatas. And durable Tootsie Rolls have been in U.S soldiers rations since WWII. Creating income for dentists around the world! And while we are at it, most people who have a dog that weighs under 30 pounds measures the dog size by relating poop to Tootsie size. Gross, I know...but true. I know I did. My Yorkie was a midgie. A friend's Spaniel is a regular size you know, the ones that have tear off pieces. So let's rock on the Tootsie Rolls. Those sweets have looked and tasted amazingly similar since the beginning...and it costs the same...one penny! ------------------------------------------------------------ The EVERLight - The No Fuel, No Flame Lighter That Lasts ForEVER The EVERLight is now available to the general public. He hand-rolled a chocolatey, chewy confection using a recipe he had brought from his homeland. * Hirschfield named his creation after his 5 year old daughter, Clara, whose nickname was Tootsie. * The Tootsie Roll became America's first individually wrapped penny candy. * The candy is included rations and became highly valued by the armed forces for its ability to withstand severe weather conditions and give troops "quick energy." It's with the troops in the Middle East. a bit of home in a chewy bite. * In the early years of television, the company sponsors popular children's shows including Howdy Doody, Rin Tin Tin and Rocky & Bullwinkle. * 1931 the Tootsie Pop, consisting of hard candy on the outside and chocolatey, chewy Tootsie Roll on the inside, is invented. * How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop? It depends on a variety of factors such as the size of your mouth, the amount of saliva, etc. Basically, the world may never know. Estimates from children seem to run from a low of 100 licks to a high of 5,800 licks, with most of them ranging from 600-800 licks. Students at Whittier Elementary in Waukesha, WI determined that it takes an average of 9 minutes to reach the center of a Tootsie Pop. A group of engineering students from Purdue University recorded that their licking machine, modeled after a human tongue, took an average of 364 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. They tried the same licking test on 20 volunteers and found that the average licks to the center were 252 licks. A chemical engineering doctorate student from the University of Michigan recorded that his licking machine required an average of 411 licks per Tootsie Pop. A group of students at Swathmore School used human lickers in a scientific experiment and determined it took an average of 144 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. * Since 1970, the Tootsie Roll Company has received more than 20,000 letters from children around the world who believe they have solved the mystery behind how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. Not only do the good people at Tootsie Roll respond to every letter children send in, they also sends out a certificate, "The Clean Stick Award," to each person who mails in a response to the question of how many licks it takes. * One Hungarian ghostbuster claims that you can catch a ghost in a jar with a Tootsie Roll. He insists that ghosts cannot resist Tootsie Rolls. A lit candle must be placed in the jar with an unwrapped Tootsie Roll. The ghost will enter the jar and then you just put the lid on. The ghost will remain in the jar until the jar is opened or broken. * The company produces more than sixty million Tootsie Rolls per day. Also, as the world's largest lollipop supplier, the company daily produces twenty million pops. ------------------------------------------------------------ <*>L<*> Heard Any Good Gossip Lately? <*>L<*> With Trashy Tabloids YOU WILL.. These were on another rootsweb list today, incase some of you missed them. Jerilyn http://www.trentonhistory.org/Exp/Chrono.htm http://oldmillhillsociety.org/research/naturalization/DeclarationOfIntent.htm There are a few other sites off of the oldmillhillsociety.org and also the trentonhistory.org, too.
Has anyone heard from Jerilyn? I haven't seen any messages from her nor have I received any. I worried that something may be wrong with Tom's mother. When they went to Florida last year she was pretty sick then . I sure hope everything is okay.
Ruth - I don't get Court TV - our cable company is Cablevision and they don't have Court TV --Dominick Dunne had great books and was a good speaker but sometimes I see him on Fox News or Larry King - seems he is losing it - is it old Age? As far as the Trent House - I was there about 5 yrs ago to hear a lecture on historical homes - they were then going to close for repairs - haven't been back since - I was going to Kuser Mansion also for lectures - didn't attend last year - If I had my way I would be going to a Lecture every day - The other nite I watch The History Channel - program was about The Bible Code -I don't know if it is all that true if it was why can't we read it in English or the Language of our Country - Did God mean it only for the Jewish people ----Marie G
Hi Marie - Am wondering about the Trent House and would you recommend a visit- looking for a mini trip on a Sunday and have been to the state museum, Kuser mansion and the old barracks...any suggestions? Just want to take a drive from the shore for a few hours and then have a snack at the Cracker Barrel. We two also fall asleep in front of the TV - have you tried watching Dominic Dunne on Court TV - keeps me awake...and wonder who on the list is following the Jason Williams trial?
