    2. Jack Allen
    3. I'm invited to my niece's husband's name day party. He is Greek and from what I understand, in their culture their name day is a bigger deal than their birthday. He is in his 50's. Anyone have any idea on what an appropriate gift would be?

    3. What a beautiful bouquet your Gardenia's must have made. I truly love the smell of gardenias. My daughter is trying Orchids in her flower room. They tell me they are easy to raise. I used to raise many African Violets, they are touchy with too much sun and watch the water on the leaves or you have a brown one Norma. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, May 05, 2004 6:43 AM Subject: [NJ-Memories] Orchids > I recently went to a friend's viewing and every flower piece had orchids in > the display - she and her husband belonged to the Orchid club - her late > husband grew them - Marie G > > > ============================== > Gain access to over two billion names including the new Immigration > Collection with an Ancestry.com free trial. 3. Jerilyn, What a precious memory. If you think hard you can remember something about every flower. Being a flower and tree person whenever I see either they remind me of something. When we had our Son, money was tight, and Frank brought me 3 Roses, I will never forget. Times were hard then, and I got many flowers that came from along the road. 3. Wish you could cut some for me. I do have 2 giant Gardenia's that have hundreds of blooms on them. You can smell them all over the yard. I remember going to NYC and the vendors had corsage's of them for a quarter. We always got one. 1. Re: Flowers
    2. Hi Everyone, We had lilac and forsythia bushes, also. I loved the smell of lilacs and hated walking to the tree to pick a switch, when I was young. LOL It used to sting my legs a little, but the lessons were learned well. Some things you just didn't do. I was thinking of May Day and the Maypole at school. Also, we used to take pieces of wall paper and fashion cone type holders to fill with flowers. We would go ring the recipients doorbell and hide to watch them open the door. Now I have to laugh, as I bet they saw us peeking from behind the trees, etc., but never let on. We had all types of flowers in our yard. Dogwood tree, cherry tree, batchlor's buttons, peonies, hollyhocks(which I haven't seen in years and you made dolls out of). I can still see the clusters of cherry blossoms outside my bedroom window. These are just the ones I remember, along with roses. I wanted to buy a lilac bush and see how it would do down here, but haven't done it yet. We are landscaping around the house and it takes time. Pat

    2. Tom and I also have tall old lilac bushes behingd our garage.I have to especially remember to go to the back of the yard and look for their blooms. It is usually the aroma that reminds me.Our pink dogwood is also very healthy looking this year.Good thing, there for a bit several years in a row, we were concerned it had lived its good long lifespan and was planning to bite the dust. I am sure Carl would have something to say on this topic we have wandered into. What do you have to contribute ,Carl? Jerilyn ,enjoying Spring in the Garden State

    2. FaithAnn, We also have lovely forsythia bushes in our front yard.I have pages in albums of my brother and me in our Easter duds in front of those pretty blooms. NJ DOT has planted hundreds of forsythia bushes along Route 55 in South Jersey that create at virtual sea of golden from Deptford to Millville.I look forward to a ride every year just to enjoy the riot of color. 3. Faith Ann & Jerilyn, Not fair you are bringing back NJ memories of the beautiful old trees and flowers. My memories were of Lilac's. We always had big purple ones and their smell, I swear I can smell now. I used to take a piece of paper and with a pencil and poke holes in it with a message to my Mother. You take the lilac flowers and put them in the holes, so pretty and the aroma. Have one here and it doesn't like the South. My neighbor gave it to me 7 yrs ago and its still only 2 ft. tall, BUT it had 2 small flowers this year. I hope it lives. Our Apple tree was such a delight. My Dad had an old army saddle and he put that on a rope so we got to swing on that. 2. Hi there, Forsythia, one side of my childhood home was covered with forsythia bushes, this was always our spot for pictures. My bedroom on the second floor of our home looked out on the back garden, there was a very large, old apple tree, I always looked forward to it coming in bloom, it was just so beautiful. I could sit in the window and look at it for hours, I could even see it while I was in bed. Then there was my Grandmothers tulip garden, to this day tulips are my favorite cut flowers. As I write this I am looking at a pot of mini tulips here on my desk. My husband brought them for my office. Oh such sweet memories, thanks for getting us thinking of them. Faith Ann

    1. Wisteria
    2. Dear Memory Pals, What plantings of your childhood so you remember? What precious trees or shrubs were backdrops for your family's snapshots? This is the time of the year that my gorgeous wisteria bush is in bloom beside my Victorian wrap-around porch..Besides being a luscious shade of pale lavender, the sweet smell of it's flowers drift through my screen door to provide nature's best air freshener. Many Mother's Day and Prom pictures have been posed through the years in front of it's backdrop. Many moons ago,on the eve of my departure to Kentucky for college,I posed in front of its branches. This Friday when three generations of us are leaving for our church's annual mother and daughter banquet,we shall stop and pose in front of it's sweet blossoms ,swat away carpenter bees, and record another momentous event for our family chronicles. I never want to live long enough to see this delightful plant die.It holds too many keys to precious memories. The blossoms are exquisite, but even in the bitterest part of winter,it's ancient twisted branches weave a pattern of soothing shadows.Plants are indeed member's of our family so to speak. What one's linger,as sweet echoes of your past? Waxing maudlin tonight, Jerilyn

    3. >Don't know what the trouble is. I tried to unsubscribe from another roots list and got back a funny message. I am trying to get my machine info in, and download some things. All in all , I don't seem to have time anymore to get everything done. I do know after today's Tea for the Specially Challenged I will be able to stay home. lol. This is an event I really love. The Mother's and their children put on a fashion show from one of our dress stores. Even have a lovely lady playing a harp during the events. We have Tea and wonderful sandwiches and desserts done by the children and volunteers. Our tickets are donated to the cause. So briefly we had a wonderful rain and we were almost in a drought soooooooo happy for that. Showers today will not dampen our spirits as the Red Hats go again. 1. Fw: Guards - Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

    3. Unbelievable... ----- Original Message ----- From: Jean B Hansen Sent: Sunday, April 18, 2004 7:41 AM Subject: Fw: Guards - Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Interesting READING .......Guards - Tomb of the Unknown Soldier 1. How many steps does the guard take during his walk across the tomb of the Unknowns and why? 21 steps. It alludes to the twenty-one gun salute, which is the highest honor given any military or foreign dignitary. 2. How long does he hesitate after his about face to begin his return walk and why? 21 seconds for the same reason as answer number 1. 3. Why are his gloves wet? His gloves are moistened to prevent his losing his grip on the rifle. 4. Does he carry his rifle on the same shoulder all the time, and if not, why not? He carries the rifle on the shoulder away from the tomb. After his march across the path, he executes an about face, and moves the rifle to the outside shoulder. 5. How often are the guards changed? Guards are changed every thirty minutes, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year. 6. What are the physical traits of the guard limited to? For a person to apply for guard duty at the tomb, he must be between 5' 10" and 6' 2" tall and his waist size cannot exceed 30". Other requirements of the Guard: They must commit 2 years of life to guard the tomb, live in a barracks under the tomb, and cannot drink any alcohol on or off duty for the rest of their lives. They cannot swear in public for the rest of their lives and cannot disgrace the uniform {fighting} or the tomb in any way. After two years, the guard is given a wreath pin that is worn on his lapel signifying he served as guard of the tomb. There are only 400 presently worn. The guard must obey these rules for the rest of his life or give up the wreath pin. The shoes are specially made with very thick soles to keep the heat and cold from his feet. There are metal heel plates that extend to the top of the shoe in order to make the loud click as he comes to a halt. There are no wrinkles, folds or lint on the uniform. Guards dress for duty in front of a full-length mirror. The first six months of duty a guard cannot talk to anyone, nor watch TV. All off duty time is spent studying the 175 notable people laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. A guard must memorize who they are and where they are interred. Among the notables are: President Taft, Joe E. Lewis {the boxer} and Medal of Honor winner Audie Murphy, {the most decorated soldier of WWII} of Hollywood fame. Every guard spends five hours a day getting his uniforms ready for guard duty
