We also called the area Medeconk... or I use to go to the Squan River off Cedar Rd or Ave. dock right out in the Manasquan River. Was The River Club. Oh my over fifty yrs ago... smile we use to dance there in a log like clubhouse witha jukebox... wonderful.. also at Medeconk.. Sunday School picnics there every year.. wonderful times

    2. Hi, folks, Does anyone remember Cedarwood Park? It was a small colony on Manasquan(sp?) Bay, and my folks and relatives always rented a cabin for a month and took turns vacationing. All I remember of it was the really nice beach, great water-skiing and the rumor that there was a nudist colony right up the road!!! I think it was located about half way between Rt. 70 and Point Pleasant, maybe on Herbertsville Rd. I'm living in CA now, but heading for NJ sometime in July to visit cousins I haven't seen in 35 years. Jim LaPolla Heart Transplant # 183 Cedars-Sinai Med. Ctr. Hollywood, CA 1/26/1996

    3. Hi all, Anyone enjoying the Cicadas visit as much as we are here in MD? The noise is like a loud hum, very weird, not like their summer relatives They are everywhere, all over the decks, in the pool and lawn. I always remove them from the pool, hate to see them drown when their life span is so short. Dogs think they make a tasty meal and the cats think they are here as toys. ( As soon as I catch a cat with one I rescue it) Anyone out there been hit with Sudden Oak Death? My two beautiful Rhododendrons seem to have it. I contacted MD Dept. of Agri. which sent me a kit in which to submit samples. I understand that it isn't always fatal so I'm hopeful. 3. >Wondered where Jerseybel was, glad to see her back. Have lost track of a few Vicki and Donna come to mind. Maybe we have all been too busy. I hope to get back soon, tired of being sick. Limey? don't know. I have my speakers hooked up and heard the Birds sing in the lovely movie Jerilyn sent. It really sounds like my back yard now. All the Cardinals, BlueBirds, Robins, Chickadees, Baltimore Oreigals, Tit mice, Jays, Carolina Wrens, you name it ,they all have their little one how now. So funny watching them try to fly. We're sorta in a forest and the birds live here, most all year. Have 3 different kinds of Wood peckers even a Pielated. Tomorrow I am going to the Red Hats boat trip on the Inland Waterway, with box lunch. Marie did you find a group near you yet? I have some Jersey girls in Flemington looking too. There are so many down here. We are the Ruby Gems. Well need to place order we are having Gen. So's tonight, how about you Dot? Well thats a start and its been over a month of limited typing. I try to do a little each day. Now lets see, the shore. We always were in Seaside Hights for a month in the summer many moons ago. I wonder how much Atlantic City has changed its been 20 yrs. for me since I've been to the shore. One time on a boat to Cape May on the ferry when we lived in Wachapreague. Let's go here. Diesel get going soon I am answering you off line. 2. Jerilyn, That poem says it all. I have always said this house will wait or it will be here when I am gone, but my children growing, etc., would not wait. We always went, were involved, etc. My children are grown and gone, but they still come ahead of my house. So does a good book! Right now we are housebreaking my daughter's boxer pup for her. My husband says I volunteered, but he is right in there helping and she will get a spoiled rotten pup. Even our adult boxer is helping. LOL Love the poem. Pat

    1. Re: Tan in a bottle
    2. Jerilyn, You brought back some humorous memories. When that tan in a bottle came out I could not wait to get it. Being either an ashe blonde or strawberry blonde, I always burned, blistered and pealed. Nothing helped! Then the bottle of miracle stuff. LOL I had orange streaked legs. The unfunny part is that now I have had my first skin cancer. It was on the knuckle of my right hand at the begiinning of my index finger. I thought that was an odd place, until I realized that years of driving had exposed that knuckle. We loved our visits to the shore and I was the girl on the beach with a tshirt on. LOL Seaside Heights, Asbury Park and Atlantic City were our usual places. I, especially, loved the wild rides that spun you or turned you upside down. Now looking at them makes me queasy. When my children were younger we would take them to a private beach near Long Branch. Later in the evening we would take them on down to Seaside Heights. Pat

    1. Shore Memories
    2. As another summer shore season begins, memories should flow easily for all of us.My grandparents always took my brother and I "down the shore"[as only a Jerseyite would say],for at least two weeks every summer. Those weeks later stretched into an entire season as we became older.I eventually worked for a whole season on the boardwalk in Ocean city in a 5+10 before I left for college in Kentucky. My shore memories began in Atlantic City ,and as years passed we went to Wildwood,North Wildwood,Ocean City,Sea Isle, and then finally they purchased a home in North Cape May.I now visit my son and his family who live in Cape May. Each place gave me sweet ,and yet quite different memories.I got burnt to a crisp in each place even with the slatherings of the latest sun protection.Granted the baby oil and iodine craze did not guard me much, and neither did Gaby.Anyone remember that?It came in a brown glass bottle, and smelled so unique, much like Tangee lipstick!Sea and Ski and Coppertone gave way to something that gave an SPF protection of 30 or more, but nothing gave one that horrible orange glow like that "tan in a bottle"as we called it.What was that terrible stuff called for real, anyone remember?Ah yes...QT. What are your memories? Jerilyn

    1. Dust If You Must
    2. These words are certainally ones to ponder. With summer days at hand,we would do well to remember them.Go out and make memories with your children, grandchildren,or friends! "Dust if you must, but wouldn't it be better, To paint a picture or write a letter, Bake a cake or plant a seed, Ponder the difference between want and need? Dust if you must, but there's not much time, With rivers to swim and mountains to climb, Music to hear and books to read, Friends to cherish and life to lead. Dust if you must, but the world's out there, With the sun in your eyes, the wind in your hair, A flutter of snow, a shower of rain. This day will not come 'round again. Dust if you must, but bear in mind, Old age will come and it's not always kind. And when you go and go you must, You, yourself, will make more dust. "Author Unknown Have fun making memories! Jerilyn

    1. Hi Sharon and All!
    2. James Thorne
    3. Hi Sharon and All, We returned a few days ago from a six week trip to North and south Carolina to visit with out Son Matt. He took two weeks leave from the Camp Le Jeune Marine Corps Base and camped with us in the Carolinas. We had a great time, especially the night of "The Great Catfish Rodeo" when Matt and his room mate filled two freezers with the largest catfish I have even seen. In NJ catfish normally grew to 8 or 10 inches, but these things were up to 27" long. Of course we returned to Monmouth County, NJ and camped for a week at Allaire State Park and visited with our close old friends, ate out, visited Sandy Hook for the first time, and the Twin Lights at Atlantic Highlands which we hadn't seen for years. Also visited Bill Thorne and his mother Shirley who live in Atlantic Highlands. They are real nice people. While in Monmouth County we went to the "Count Basie Theater" (the old "Carlton Theater") in Red Bank and saw "Man of La Mancha" (sp?) As a child my father spent several winters in Red Bank and his best friend was "the Count". We left here (Prince Edward Island) in an ice and snow storm and almost returned home, then had rain all the way to Virginia. We had heavy rain at Carolina Beach State Park near Wilmington, NC, a few nice days near North Augusta, SC, good weather in NJ, but cold rain on the way home. We camped at Freeport, ME hoping it would clear, but finally had to pack up in the rain and returned here to PEI with everything and ourselves drenched. After the past three dry days we have finally dried the tents and ourselves, mowed the grass, balanced the books, planted more of the garden, and will take tomorrow "off". It was a great vacation, but it could have been warmer at time and drier. Matt is still at Camp Le Jeune, NC and is preparing to leave for Iraq in September. He gave me a thorough tour of the base. It was impressive! I've talked more than enough about our adventures. What have the rest of you been doing? Jim from Prince Edward Island

Have not been on much as have not been able to type. Got a shot yesterday and today a dull ache, so am on. This will not last but after blood work Dr. will address what to do. 3. I was shocked to find out about the proposed demise of Roosevelt Stadium in Union City -- to be replaced with a school and gym. Has anyone else read this sad news? Is anyone else interested in trying to save the Stadium? I'm heartbroken -- so many memories........... I used to live right next to the stadium at 24th & Summit Avenue. I was a majorette in UHHS and my brother and cousins had gone to Emerson -- so we had a friendly rivalry each Thanksgiving -- except I was outnumbered. I even remember a May Pole Day celebration when I was about 4 years old and even a time when they flooded the stadium for ice-skating. Where will they play football and baseball games if the stadium is gone? There is nothing like that grand old stadium -- playing fields with bleacher seating is no comparison to the feel of being and playing in a stadium. It is on the list of 10 most endangered historic sites in NJ. It is a shame to get rid of our history -- the UHHS -Emerson Thanksgiving game rivalry existed since the early 1900's. Here is the link with an excellent excerpt of the Hudson Dispatch's rendering of its history and celebration when it was commemorated in 1937 -- as a project of the CWA and the companies that contributed to its building ........ http://www.jerseycityhistory.net/fdrstadiumunioncity-1.html Claire
