    3. Hi Linda, I said hello as well but is very brief. I do not write as much like I use to but during the winter I have more time. We have all been on this site for a long time. We are all very close group of people. Talk Soon, Robin PS: Where is Carl?????????????? Carl, I do not have your email address anymore because my computer crashed. Please send me a letter so I can save it. Take Care, Robin ----- Original Message ----- From: Linda Vible<mailto:[email protected]> To: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> Sent: Friday, November 05, 2004 2:00 PM Subject: Re: [NJ-Memories] Introduction: New to Group Thanks for the warm welcome, Ann. Thanks also to Jerilyn and Dot, who were so kind in welcoming me. I left South Jersey when Resorts Casino opened. I couldn't imagine working in a casino and I figured I wouldn't able to make enough money anywhere else to keep up with the cost of living that was due to come because of the casinos. I had been to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg for a vacation and remembered it as being a nice place. I was right. Not only a nice place to visit, but a nice place to live. It wasn't until I spent last summer with my family that I truly began to miss the Jersey shore. I visited Atlantic City beach a couple of times, which with all the upgrades they made to the beach, was quite nice. However, the city itself was very depressing. I saw so much sadness. I don't consider myself a pessimist, but I just couldn't shake the feeling I got. Ocean City was exactly as I had remembered it, and I spent many nights on the boardwalk with my husband and my youngest daughter, who is nine years old. It was a pleasure to show her all the things that had remained the same over the years. It was an even greater pleasure enjoying Mack and Manco's pizza. YUM! I brought eight pounds of Shriver's salt water taffy home to give to friends and neighbors. I always buy Shriver's because I used to babysit for Frank and Maureen Glaser, who used to own it. I read somewhere during my visit that Frank no longer owned Shrivers. I ate a couple of tubs of Johnson's caramel corn on top of the many cheese steak subs. There's nothing like a sub from the shore. We don't have subs here in Williamsburg, although they try to pass off imitations as Philly cheese steaks. They don't even come close. And the Italian "subs" here have mayo on them! Hello? Where's the oil? Where's the oregano? To top it off they will sometimes ask you if you want your "sub" heated. Ewww! I visited the Point Diner a couple times. I was sad to see the changes. I worked there in 1974-1977. I worked in the bakery, which had the best danish in the area. I've yet to find pastries and danish like the kind the Point Diner put out. The cinnamon buns were huge! Everytime I ride around the Somers Point circle, I find myself missing Tony Marts. I spent many a night there. The drinking age was 18 and I started sneaking in when I was 16. Shh! Don't tell anyone. I missed the live bands of the area bars when I first got to Williamsburg. We had lounges here, which were always attached to a hotel. No live bands to be found, though. Boy, it didn't take much to get me started. I'd better go now and save some of my good memories for another post. Kindest Regards, Linda ============================== New! OneWorldTree. I am descended from Nicholas Camp I of England. Does your Camp line come down from William Camp who went from Milford or Branford to NJ? I was born and raised in Orange NJ, moved to Union after marriage and then to PA after retirement. Finally settled here in Florida this past spring. Just in time for the hurricanes. LOL Dot

    2. Hi Linda: I'll be the first to welcome you. I was also one of the first on the list a few years ago. I drift in and out because my daughter moved to OH and I visit often. Somers Point is a lovely part of NJ. Altho I live in Farmingdale and love it here. I had a friend whose maiden name was Trout. She came from Salem. If you see any connection please reply privately and we can discuss her. I am also into genealogy. I was looking for my great aunt for over 20 years. I bought the entire 1880 census on CD and found her, she was a nun. Good luck. Ann in Farmingdale AVP

    3. I'm new to the list and thought I would introduce myself. My name is Linda Brooke Vible. I'm married with seven children (only two left at home, not counting the two in college) and I have lived in Williamsburg, Virginia for the past 25 years. I was born at Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point, NJ and lived in Linwood, NJ for 18 years. Many of my ancestors are from Cape May and Cumberland Counties and I have fond memories of visiting Sea Isle City and Dennisville with my grandfather. I've been bitten by the genealogy bug and have gathered lots of information regarding my family. I hope to learn as much as possible between now and the summer so that I can find the supporting documentation I need when I visit my family next. My mother, sister and one brother still live in Linwood. I have another brother in Galloway Township. I've joined several other RootsWeb mailing lists, so those of you subscribing to other lists pertaining to New Jersey and specific surnames I'm researching may see this message repeated. My apologies for the repetition. I hope to be able to connect to some distant cousins, which I find to be one of the best rewards of researching via the internet. Surnames I'm interested in are CREAMER, BROOKE, HOFFMAN, BATCHELOR, TROUT, CAMP, HAND, COX, STEELMAN, COBB, CORSON. These names are direct ancestors of mine. I can provide more specifics if desired. I'd love to hear from you all. Kindest Regards, Linda

    1. Twas the night before Frances
    2. For all you transplanted Jerseyans like me. Dot ---------------------------------------------------------- 'Twas the night before Frances 'Twas the night before Frances When all through the state Not a gas pump was pumping Not a store open late. All the plywood was hung On the windows with care Knowing a hurricane Soon would be there. The children were ready With flashlights in hand While bands from the hurricane Covered over the land. And Mom with her Mag-Lite And I in my cap Had just filled the bath tub For flushing our crap. When out on the lawn There arose such a clatter I sprang from the closet To see what was the matter. The trees on the fence And the neighbor's roof torn Gave the fear of us dying In this terrible storm. With a little wind gust So lively and quick I remembered quite clearly Our walls were not brick. More rapid than eagles Her wind bands they came She whistled, and wafted And surged all the same. Off shingles! Off sidings! Off rooftops! Off powers! Down trees! And down fences! Down trailers! Down towers! In the center of Florida She continued to maul Screaming Blow Away! Blow Away! Blow Away All !!! As wind ripped and tossed The debris through the sky I peeked out the shutters At cars floating by. So go to the safe-room My family did do With a portable radio And batteries, too. And then, in a twinkling I heard on the set The end was not coming For a few hours yet! As I calmed down the kids And was turning around Through the window it came With a huge crashing sound. A tree branch it was All covered in soot The wind blew it smack-dab On top of my foot. A bundle of twigs Now lay in a stack And my living room looks Like it's under attack. The wind - how it howled! The storm - very scary! Myself and the family Were all too unwary. The dangers of hurricanes Are serious, you know They are taken for granted As Frances did show. With the winds dying down And the danger beneath I noticed my tool shed Was missing its sheath. So I grabbed my last tarp And nailed it on down Then I got in my car And I headed to town. The traffic was awful And stores had no ice My five gallon cooler Would have to suffice. Generators were scarce Not one left in town There were trees on the roads And the power lines down. FEMA was ready With people to work Electrical companies Came in from New York. And in the midst of This peculiar routine Another storm emerged Named Hurricane Jeanne. I sprang to the car And gave my family a whistle Then away we all went Like a Tomahawk missile. You could hear us exclaim As we drove out of sight "The hell with this place, New Jersey seems just right!"
