This is another piece of feel good legislation that accomplishes nothing. Restricting death records in particular makes no sense. The Social Security Administration makes records available as soon as deaths are reported. It is hard to steal somebodys ID if it is easy to determine they are dead. I don't understand how they can do this. What happened to the " Freedom of Information Act " ???? Hi Maryann & list My understanding is that the Freedom of Information Act actually applies to Federal Records and doesn't apply to records created by an individual state or county. However, NJ has an Open Public Records Act (OPRA) that functions in much the same way. This bill would remove vital records from those records to which OPRA regulations apply. That's one reason it is a bad piece of legislation - and could leave us on a slippery slope - once they do this to vital records, then why not some other records? What if they decided to close wills and estate files next, for instance! I have hope that the legislators will hear our pleas and be open to correcting the language of the bill. Certainly they'll know we're upset! They had suggested before that they might be open to changing the language - so let's hope they still are. Regards, Joan Joan M. Unfortunately, the SSDI only goes back so far. In the past I have obtained copies of NJ Vital Records that went back much, much further than the SSDI.
