Ken You are right to proceed with caution. I think you were referring to a match on World Ancestry Tree at Ancestry.com. I would go to Rootsweb.com and search for the name of the matching individual. They access the same trees as Ancestry.com but I prefer Rootswebs search engine and format. I would look for the following things. 1 Does the family tree include sources other then references to family trees found on the internet? Vital records, Wills, Deeds, or published sources. 2 Does the family tree include notes, additional information about the individual? This is a sign that the submitter has done their own research. 3 With the new found names I would do my own research. Can I find documents that verify what is on the tree? At some point my confidence level would be high enough that I would be willing to accept the rest of the tree but I would still try do find documentation supporting the tree all the way back. World Family Tree provides the name of the submitter and the email address in script that they used when they posted the tree. You can also add a “Postum” note to the name of the individual that is a match. The submitter will be notified.
