Ken, Monmouth Co. was one of the original counties and covered a larger area than we know today. Ocean Co. was formed from Monmouth in 1850. The original counties were Bergen, Burlington, Cape May, Essex, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Monmouth, and Salem. Anyone researching other counties should be checking to see when those counties came into existence and the parent county or counties. Here's a web site that list the counties, and gives you the formation dates, and parent county. http://www.nj.njgenweb.org/geography/county.html

Stephanie, thanks for sharing this site. I have already saved it because occasionally I have found births in my Sherman family who must have at one time lived there.
