    2. MaryAnn, Bridget is the given name, but there are so many nick names for Bridget, such as Biddy, Bessie, Delia, to name a few...I had a list of Irish given names & nicknames, but can't find it. The Latin name would be: Brigida, Brigitta Peggy is one of the nicknames for Margaret. Also could be Meg, Maggie etc. The Latin would be Margareta..then there is Margeria + Magery, Majorie Jeanine ----- Original Message ----- From: "maryann clark" <mrmc4540@yahoo.com> To: <NJ-GSNJ-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 26, 2005 11:33 PM Subject: Re: [GSNJ] RE: Mathews > Hello, > > I was wondering if the name Bridget was a nick name for another name. 3. Gee, I wish we had a kinship there. But I don't know. It sounds possible. Bridget must have been a common Irish name. I have found so many Bridget Wallace's and Bridget Mathews................ I just found the June 1860 NY Manhattan Census: James Mathews 28 a tinsmith born Ireland Bridget Mathews 25 born Irelnd Anna Mathews 9 born NY Catherine Mathews 7 born NY Sarah Mathews 5 born NY William Mathews 2 born NY Robert Mathews 8 mths born NY 1880 Census James Mathews 50 widow Roofer Catherine 26 keeping house Sarah 24 at home William 22 roofer Robert 20 roofer Andrew 18 drug clerk James Mathews Nephew 18 George Steele grandson born July 1879 Would love to have the 1870 and 1890 census. I will just keep on searching. Our Bridget Wallace Mathews was not with the family in 1880 as well as Anna (may be that she married) and the oldest daughter Catherine was head of the house. Sarah, our gg grandmother had just given birth to George William Steele in July 1879. Elinor Mathews, never married, and she wrote to me that the Steele let her use the name but they did not marry. Well I did find a Mary Steele and son George W Steele living next door to John and Anne Mathews in Manhattan. Geo was a policeman and I am just wondering if maybe Sarah met Geo when she was visiting the Mathews next door to the Steele? George was near the same age as Sarah. Can we send pictures to this list? I have a close up of George the son and Sarah Mathews the mother. She had black (dark) hair and that seems to be a factor in the Mathews genes........dark hair that doesn't turn gray as we get older............ You say James Mathews was a brick layer, well our James and Simon and George Stanley were brick masons. I have Simon Stanley's bricklayer's trade card complete with sealing wax dated July 30, 1849 so I don't think they came to America until after 1850. The Mathews may have come in the 1840's I want to say Bridget and James did not marry until they came to America. Oh I wish I knew more. I use Godfrey Memorial Library for my research. 1. Re: [GSNJ] RE: Mathews
    2. Hi Judy.. I'll try for the third time...I keep losing the message I try to write... My father spelled our name with 2 T's...but most of the others in his family spelled it with 1. I have been trying to find out the correct way, if there is one... I don't know if there is a connection...possibly, but where?, I don't know... My great great grandfather was James MATHEW, born Ire, about 1830. The earliest census I have found him is the 1860 in NJ. My great great gma, his wife, was Mary FOLEY, born abt 1831, (some records say 1837), but they had a son, John Henry, born NJ in abt 1853, so that would make her 16 when she had him if she was born in 1837. The 1860 census says she was born abt 1831. And they say the further you go back, the more probable the date, as it is closer to the event. So I am going with 1831. She was born in either Nova Scotia or Newfoundland..I have records (censuses, death certs), that say both. Her death cert said she cme to US at 1 year of age, making that about 1832. Her parents were Michael FOLEY & Bridget MURPHY, both born Ireland. I have some of her siblings, but don't know if I have them all. James MATHEWS was a mason (brick layer). I don't know who his parents were. I have found a few men that are possible brothers in Hoboken (which is next to Jersey City, born Ireland and also Jersey City. The Hoboken guys moved to Jersey City & lived in close proximity to James & Mary. But I have nothing to prove the connections. Names: Christopher, Patrick, Julius. Mary's brother, Michael FOLEY , the younger, also named one of his sons John Henry, so these are most likely after the FOLEY clan & not MATHEWS/MATTHEWS clan. As I said, I don't know when he came over & who his parents were or where in Ireland. I have not found a marriage for James & Mary and I have not found a death cert for James. The 1880 Census has son, James R as son age 24, bricklayer, but it says Mary is married, but James the elder is not listed. as head. In the 1870 census they have Pat, MATTHEWS, James, 40. I don't know where the "Pat" comes from, but the rest of the family is listed. In the 1860 Census he is listed as James, 30. James & Mary had 8 children, 5 survuvung per 1910 census. They were: John Henry, b abt 1853, married Mary J KELLY Margaret, b 1856, never married, died 1933 James R, b abt 1858, married Bridget <unkn>, died 1908 Frank, b 1859, died at age 17, July 1876 Mary, b abt 1862, never married, died 1942 Adelaide, b 1867, never married, died 1914 Augustus, b 1868, never married, died 1959 Elizabeth, b 1869, died @ 16 mos, 1870 Mary FOLEY MATTHEWS died 1913 So that's my James MATHEWS/MATTHEWS family. Thanks for getting back to me about your MATHEWS family. BTW: In the Emigrant Savings Bank Colection there is a Mary MATTHEWS/MATHEWS listed there, living in NYC. I haven't gotten to the NY Library yet to check it out further . If you have an Ancestry subscription you can look to see if your family is there. I found my Michael MORAN family & it tols me the year he came ove, where in NYC they lived, his occ , his wife & kids, who I already had, PLUS it gave his brother, Patrick, in Troy, NY & 2 sisters in NYC, his mother's name , his deceased father, where he embarked & where in Ireland he came from. A wealth of information in one little record. If you don't have a sub, there are 3 volunteers on Pat Connors' NY-Irish pages doing lookups. www.connorsgenealogy.com Jeanine Matthews NJ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Janelle Warden" <jmwwardn@bellsouth.net> To: <NJ-GSNJ-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 21, 2005 8:18 PM Subject: [GSNJ] RE: Mathews > "I have an Aunt thru marriage, Marge Stanley, still living. 3. Hello, I was wondering if the name Bridget was a nick name for another name. Like Peggy is for Margaret, etc. ect. My great grandmother's name was Bridget Calvey, she married Patrick Brady. I can find all thier kids baptisms & marraiges at St. Aloysious, but nothing on either of them anywhere. Maryann Janelle Warden <jmwwardn@bellsouth.net> wrote: Gee, I wish we had a kinship there. I always use the ancestryplus when the public library let us go in from our home computers but this year they cut that out and I refuse to spend a lot of money . Godfrey is reasonable for a year, $35.00. 3. Judi, I did a quick search of the U.S. Marshall website and found their Research page [http://www.usdoj.gov/marshals/history/records_assistance.htm] which lists the different record groups that have the potential for information on Oliver Barnet. Maybe a search of ARC would reveal some more detail? Also, NUCMC didn't list anything directly for Oliver, so really can't comment on local repositories' holdings. Hope all is well!! Brant in 1824" Piscataway, Middlesex, Raritan and the name MUNDY sound like she could be related to the SHREVE, MARTIN, and all that settled in NJ coming from NH. I found a John and Isaac Munday married to Martin sisters, Rachel and Ann, back in 1753. Thet were sisters to my Catherine Martin Shreve. I also have Nicholas Munday married to Mary Martin in the 1680's In New Jersey Archives 1669 the marriage between Mary and Hopewell was declared unlawful. But they must have straightened it out as their children were born soon after. 6 children born to them All these families were in NJ in the early early days. Janelle Warden
