    3. Hi Ann Marie If you go to the GSNJ website and to the Legislative Alerts page, that will take you to a sample letter. www.gsnj.org There is also a link from the Legislative Alerts page that will take you to a page with more information on the bill and contact information for the sponsors of the bill. That link is the one that says GSNJ Position & Recommendations. Hope that is what you want. Regards, Joan Joan M. 3. The vital statistics you refer to are from dead people, so technically they aren't vital at all. That's a fact as well. I can make up statistics off the top of my head, and they will have just as much validity as the statistics for a dead person- absolutely none at all. This bill is ridiculous, and I applaud and support any efforts to, so to speak, kill it. 3. Dear Joan, I did a google search for the governor of NJ and was able to send him a email from his site regarding this matter, and I urge all on our list to do the same. Little by little our rights are being taken away from us. We have to stand togeather and protest this kind of government. In my letter to him I told him as genealogists if this information were to be sealed it would bring our research to a screeching holt. And as NJ is one of the original Colonies it is even more important that we be able to have access to this information. I'm all the way in California, but those of you in NJ might consider protesting outside these offices to obtain more public awareness. Also talk to someone at your local newspaper office and try to get an artical published. I hope all of you will do what ever you can to stop this from moving forward. Maryann Clark "Joan M Lowry (GSNJ)" <jml-gsnj@earthlink.net> wrote: Hi Maryann & list My understanding is that the Freedom of Information Act actually applies to Federal Records and doesn't apply to records created by an individual state or county. However, NJ has an Open Public Records Act (OPRA) that functions in much the same way. This bill would remove vital records from those records to which OPRA regulations apply. That's one reason it is a bad piece of legislation - and could leave us on a slippery slope - once they do this to vital records, then why not some other records? What if they decided to close wills and estate files next, for instance! I have hope that the legislators will hear our pleas and be open to correcting the language of the bill. Certainly they'll know we're upset! They had suggested before that they might be open to changing the language - so let's hope they still are. Regards, Joan Joan M. 3. Hi Folks Thank you all for writing letters, etc. and for getting the word out to other lists and other places. I've been hearing from people who have seen "my" post on lists I've never even heard of! We are definitely getting a lot of support. I hope the legislators have to dedicate an assistant just to opening our mail. GSNJ is working with historical groups in NJ (as well as other genealogical societies) and they are interested in helping out. As you know - this would have a serious impact on historical research as well. I know they are interested and responsive to our concerns. We will keep you posted whenever we hear something new - good or bad, but let's hope for good! Enjoy the rest of your weekend - and, for those of you in NJ, don't shovel too hard!! (I'm hearing that at least 12 inches of snow are expected for the total for our area by Sunday afternoon.... (It'll take me till Monday to get my car out of the driveway!)) Regards, Joan Joan M.
