The great battleship, USS New Jersey a/k/a BB62, is now docked at Camden. My eldest son served on it and crossed the equator on it=during westpac tour. When i saw it, it was coming into Long Beach Calif, harbor- a sight to behold this bohemeth mountain of a ship coming out of the fog- it was like a skyscraper moving thru the water. We toured what we were allowed(some parts women not allowed in then, as it was on active duty) and were amazed. It was docked next to the battleship Missouri, which shortly after we left, Cher, the singer, used as a prop for her "if i could turn back time" show. My son greatly enjoyed the show! Strange part is that this ship took part in the invasions and battles that my dad( a seabee with aka 74) also did, in the South Pacific- As my son is named after him, it gave me goosebumps when I read of the battles and so on on a plaque they have in copper on door- and then to have my son go to some of the same ports was stranger yet. Happily he was out of the service prior to its serving in Desert Storm. Sad day when they retired these great beauties from our services.Great day when NJ the state acquired it for our history! Camden is a town to be very wary and careful of. Follow signs and take mass transportation to the sites for best safety- sad to see a town go down so much. linda ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Camden has been going down hill for many years.........I used to work in Camden for DYFS and there are so many houses that have been torn down - for blocks on end!! I have no problems going into Camden BUT I also know where NOT to go and when.......... My daughter has toured the New Jersey and says it is quite an awesome sight..........my brother wants to go back!!!! ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, April 30, 2007 1:19 PM Subject: Re: [NJ] CAMDEN county History > The great battleship, USS New Jersey a/k/a BB62, is now docked at Camden. > My > eldest son served on it and crossed the equator on it=during westpac > tour. > When i saw it, it was coming into Long Beach Calif, harbor- a sight to > behold > this bohemeth mountain of a ship coming out of the fog- it was like a > skyscraper moving thru the water.
