Howdy - last week I made mention of my working on another project involving the extraction of entries in the 13 Calendar of Wills subset of the NJ Archives volumes, involving 'wards and their guardians'. As a prelude to providing that material in full, am including here a portion of what is being accomplished, hoping it will spurn some interest by the membership in some of the ancestral data which may be of further help to researchers. This material is only preliminary, and I will not be able to do any lookups or transcriptions at this time. Further, the DATABASE is in no way completed, nor is even this first section - listing of ward's surnames beginning with A. To view the data properly, please follow the directions included as, because of the amount of data extracted, and limitations of space, it was necessary to make changes to form and layout to include as much useful data as possible. I welcome comments! David - [email protected] INSTRUCTIONS FOR 'WARDS & GUARDIANS' DATABASE This DATABASE was done using Microsoft WORD. To view the material properly, set your Margins to 0.5", make your Tabs 0.3"; Type form and size is 10pt Arial, and the Layout is Landscape. There are six (6) columns of data: 1. NAME - surname in CAPS, followed by any given names; when age is known it is in parentheses. 2. LOCATION - generally, the NJ county name only, but may be of another location, and when known, it has been inserted. 3. FILED - when petition was filed for appointment of Guardian. The date of Appointment has NOT been included, due to space limitations. 4. DEC'D PARENT (or OTHER) - normally, only the deceased father's name was given. Sometimes the mother's was as well, and if she did not remarry she is included before their surname. If she did remarry, and it was given, that married name follows that of the deceased father. In some cases the father is not deceased, in which cases the fact that he is 'living' has been inserted. 5. GUARDIAN - name of person or persons appointed to act as Guardian until ward comes of age; generally 21. When known, the relationship to the ward was included. 6. SOURCE - in which volume of the Calendar of Wills set the full entry is found.
