I did this years ago before the advent of computers. I went to the library and looked up phone numbers and addresses of people with the names I was looking for. I had a short pedigree chart made up with spaces for their answers as well. I mailed and asked if they had any info on the family. It turned out that someone from Peru who was just visiting the family had just returned from a trip to England and visited the family site over there. While he had no info to give me he did have the name and address of a couple who had been there before him. This couple were descended from the brother of my greatgrandfather and were instrumental in my taking the line back to 1584.
