The FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH of CAPE MAY located in Cape May Court House, Middle Twp.is the oldest Church in Cape May Co. All types of records have been kept over the years. The oldest record book is dated 1712. The records include subscription papers, pew rental books, poor house records, receipts, bills and letters pertaining to material, transporting means & costs, labor & etc.used in building their meeting houses (they are currently in the 5th one). They have submission and dismission papers. The record books and papers that have been kept for almost 300yrs. show means of livihood and the mobility of people during those times. Since the records are in the process of being sorted, filed and conserved they are not available to the public yet. Requests for information will be answered as time allows. The FIRST BAPTIST CEMETERY is an interesting site. The first recorded burial is from the 1740's. Records have been kept of burial plot purchases from sometime in the 1870's. Some members of the Cemetery Committee have started cleaning the old stones, some of which are so covered with mold, dirt and grime they are hardly legible. It is very time consuming.Transcriptions made in the 1920's have been copied and alphabetized and obits are being copied from old newspapers. If anyone has a family plot in the cemetery and would like to help in some way, they can contact the Church at [email protected] or www.firstbaptistcourthouse.org. I was born in CAPE MAY CO. and my families have been here since the beginning. I am researching the STITES, SHIVERS and BUCK families. Susan
